carb options for daily first gen?
 

i have a 1980 SA rx7 and i recently put a rebuilt 12a into it and now im trying to get rid of the nikki for something cheaper or more reliable. if anyone has any links to a full weber kit or could give me some insight into maybe a better alternative? that would be greatly appreciated.

My 79 had a sidedraft dellorto on it when I bought it, it looked great and sounded great and ran great wide open, but I could never get it to run properly for daily driving. I think the reason is that with an open plenum, all 4ports pull air equally, so the low speed and idle suffers. Now I run a stripped down 80 Nikki and stock manifold and the car is very drivable with the primary/secondary setup.
I would say there is nothing cheaper or more reliable the the setup you have, so if you do want to try something else, do yourself a favor and hang onto the Nikki in case you need it for the future.

The Nikki can be made to perform better than you can possibly imagine. But stock ones can be pretty lame, though still better than a poorly set up 2bbl.

There are some who use the weber on this site and like them, and there are others who had a weber or dellorto but have switched to a modded Nikki and like it more.

i like my weber, but its not on a stock engine, and it was not cheap.

Nothing is more reliable than a stock Nikki.

if im going to stick with my nikki instead of swapping the whole carb completely i need the coasting richer solenoid valve but i cant find one at all since i just dont have any good part connections but my nikki runs fine it just wont idle since the electric signal getting sent to the pin is fully disconnected and i tried rewiring it but it was too old and brittle so if any one has an extra that would be a life saver.

If your nikki is already stripped. Try putting 110 jets in the primary side and it will idle fine. I did the reverse of this and then back yesterday. Went from 110 to 100 (stock is 94, I think) to try to get longer driving stints at our race this weekend. A/F went from about 12 at idle with 110 to 13.5-15.5 and not very stable with the 100. And would not keep idling without my foot lightly on the accelerator. I assume the poor idle was a "lean miss", but I am no expert. Went back to 110's and the idle smoothed back out again. Of course, none of this is smog legal in CA, but if it is stripped it is not smog legal anyway. YMMV
