Can't Select any Gears
I was driving my vert this morning and when I was ready to pull away from a red light I could not get the transmission to go into gear. I instantly popped the hood to check the fluid in the clutch slave cylinder. The fluid is at the max line, and the clutch slave unit is brand new as well as the stainless steel fluid hose.
The clutch it is brand new as well, I replaced it when I performed my 13B T swap this year. I also replaced the shift fork, transmission front plate cover, throw out bearing. I do notice the transmission makes a whining noise when the clutch pedal is not depressed. I can put the transmission is gear when the engine is turned off, but I can not start the car in gear with the clutch pedal pushed in all the way because when I crank the ignition the car pulls forward due to the clutch is partially engaged. Does anybody know what the problem is? |
I almost forgot, the clutch pedal goes all the way to floor when I start my car, I have to mash it just to get the starter to engage,
|
You didn't bleed the clutch correctly..you have air in the system.
Bleed the Be-Jesus out of it ..again. |
Aaaahhh!!
Thank you misteryx69!!! I will do that, I really hope that is the case .
You are one of the few members that I can really on for the correct advice. |
It actually happened to me after a clutch swap,so don't feel bad.
I sat at a Light..got the green..take off..go to Second.BAM,,to the floor.Ruh-Roh Scooby Doo! |
Ha ha! Yep, that's how I felt and it was my second day on my new job I just started. Luckily it happened as I approached the job site WHEW!!
I'll have time to work on my car this weekend, for now I'm taking the bus to work. |
Still No Gears after Bleeding
I just finished bleeding the clutch system (bleed it until the fluid was at the minimum line and refilled 3 times). I adjusted the clutch pedal too and still I cannot put the transmission in any gear.
I can select gears when the engine is not running, but when I start the engine the transmission will not go into gear the shift lever will not budge at all. When I try to put it in reverse it grinds and will not go into gear. When I shut the engine off and put it in any gear and try to start the engine with the clutch pedal pushed in all the way my car lunges because the clutch is engaged still . Is this the sign of a bad transmission? |
Seized pilot bearing
|
Ah, ok. That sucks because it's new and was installed during the swap. But that would explain the whining noise when the clutch pedal is not pressed in.
Thank you Felix! |
I recently did a manual swap on a 89 vert. I installed a pilot bearing then checked to make sure it still spun freely...it did.
Installed transmission pretty smoothly then ended up with the same problem as you. Pulled transmission checked the pilot bearing and it was seized? I have yet to put the transmission back in though. To busy enjoying two other fc's at the moment. I hope you figure it out though. |
..crap..ya .Pilot bearing would essentially mate the trans to the engine and feel like you have no control from the shifter at all.Since the Engine is spinning the trans, the Clutch won't disengage the Trans from the engine so you wouldn't be able to switch gears.

Oh just a little addition on that last reply of mine,is that you would NOT be able to switch gears while the car is Running. It will switch gears fine when OFF as the trans is not spinning then.
I also had a Federal Mogul Throw Out Bearing get trashed in about 300 km..it just fell apart. Ya,I seem to learn this stuff as I go...I work on lots of these cars, and do em up and then move on to another one..lol.. Too much time on my hands! Always glad to help though. Good luck. |
sounds like a pilot bearing got mashed during the install and finally gave up.

I used a thick threaded rod in the top starter bolt hole. You can also Reverse a bolt at the top drivers Top of the trans, and is it as a guide.(try not to damage it,or get a bolt similar in thread at the hardware store.) That way you have 3 points to guide your trans in.If you think about it,you can use some threaded rod at the bottom passenger corner too,but make sure you have enough to grab it back out.(pliers) Once the trans is on and either very close to ON or actually IN place, then start taking your "guides" off and replace them with the appropriate bolts. I did this on 2 transmissions by myself, since I am "so loved" when I mention I gotta do this..(wanna Help?..POOF!..Houdini made my buddies disappear ..again!) |
i gave that same advice in other threads, i often use the starter bolt as a main guide pin due to its length and the long transmission mount bolt as the second guide. there used to be a third factory installed guide at the top center location, but it's almost never installed correctly, facing the transmission.

Honestly,I have done a couple Transmissions and don't mind doing them.( Note:I was gonna say I've done a couple Tranny's..but that would not sound right..lol!..ewww!)
you gotta move LA closer to Canada..I would help ya. |
:rlaugh: exactly the reason I stopped saying "tranny" and say transmission, because non gear heads think :gayboy: "tranny" ha ha.
That would be cool if either of us was closer, because I do need some help this time around. I'm saving to maybe have it done at a shop, because I moved since my swap and no longer have a garage :icon_tdow. Thank you though |
Yep..gives a whole new meaning to "Throw out bearing" doesn't it?..lol!
try this one..haha: " I dropped that tranny and had to pull out my mashed Bearing..it was stuck in the shaft..looked like shit". ..uh,...WHAT?...(Dude!, get the Freak away from me..lol!). This is what happens when you work on cars too much!..I need to get my shaft polished! |
Ha ha, yep that sound suspect for sure!
