Can't pour gas into the car

88 RX-7 NA

Hello again guys, so this problem has, well... been a problem ever since I first got the car. Pouring gas into the tank can work for a little while but it'll eventually start coming back out

So I opened the trunk and poured the gas in through the fuel pump assembly. Shined a light into the tank, had a friend blow compressed air into the tank and saw the fuel move accordingly. Even started filling the tank again normally while the fuel pump assembly was open and the gasoline was still pouring back out from where it was coming from andddd the tank wasn't anywhere near full

Any ideas?

The main filler neck has a junction between two rubber pieces a few inches behind the inlet assembly that bolts to the body (where you stick the gas station nozzle in). Installing the rubber hoses is a little tricky and can end up twisted.

You'll need to access it through the panels at the rear and remove the side carpet. You'll probably cut your hands up pretty good on the sheetmetal back there. It's a pretty self-explanatory once you find it.

more than likely your venting systym is blocked or damaged, you need to look at diagram around the fuel tank area, locate the various parts of it and check them, could be as simple as gunk or mud blocking the venting,i believe there is also venting around the fuel filler neck opening, check there also

^Good test for the venting system. If the giant access panel is open, it won't matter if the 1/2" vent line is blocked or not.

I went through what sounds like the exact same problem and many of the same tests. Quick test with a flashlight and a screwdriver. From outside the car, push open the metal filler flap and look down the filler neck. If the walls look like they spiral down, the junction got twisted during installation. If they are flat, move on to an obstruction further down the filler neck.
