Can someone explaing S4, S5, etc???

Hi, had a couple of 1st gens including my current '84 GSL-SE. in looking through the posts i keep seeing S4 engines, S5 engines. Can someone please explain for me?

I'm familiar with 12A, 13B, four port and six port induction, 20B, etc. Just not the S designations. Thanks.

Series I-1979/1980
II-1981/1983
III-1984/1985
IV-1986/1991
V-1993-Newer

If a Series III is 84-85, is my SE with a 13B the same series as a GSL with a 12A?

Turbonut 10-02-02 07:48 PM

I would assume so. An '91TII is the same as an '86 automatic SE-Both Series 5-These are only to differentiate the years, not accessories/engines/trans.

Not quite.

S6: 1993-1995
S7: 1996-1998
S8: 1999-2002

and I THINK:

S4: 1986-1988
S5: 1989-1992

Someone back me up on the FCs I don't know those well.

Most used in Aussie, the Series designation has started to catch on in the US a little.

In the US, there wasn't a 1992 model (some will argue there were some Vert's released as 1992 models, but these were just overstock 1991 models - check the VIN), so for FC's, 1986-1988 = Series IV and 1989-1991 = Series V.&nbsp (I use "Zenki" and "Kouki" designations myself.)

There were some FD3S models released in Japan as 1992 models, so it's best to leave out the 1992 totally.

there are no 1993 fd's built in the calender year of 93. they were all built in 1992 =)

"Model year" I define with how Mazda does - via the VIN, not the build date. :)

You could call the GSL-SE a series III special edition. :)

that is what i was about to say as well, i knew for a fact that all the 2nd gens are not in the same series. The 86-88 are s4 and have the "rectanglular" tail lights. and the 89-91 are s5 and have the circular tail lights. (which i like myself). I have an '86 N/A.

the gslse is funny. the whole world got the same, suspension and wheels
we got the fully loaded whammin jammin car with the 6 port 13b, sunroof etc
eurpoe i think got a middle trim level, with a carby big port 12a
japan: got the turbo 12a (we would break it), and a choice of interior trim, the gs, gsl, and gsl-se interior correspond to the gt, gtx, and gt limited.

I thought that zenki and kuoki actually applied only to the S4. Zenki being the earlier part that cuts off at june '87 I believe and Kuoki being the later. The VIN cutoff for Zenki is VIN #7601? The low impedance/high impedance injector changeover.

s4 and s5 have a lot of differences, gauges, shifter throw is different, the wheels, front and rear fascias, electric omp on the s5, rear lights, center consols, different turbos and exhaust manifolds, intercoolers dont bolt up the same way, lighter rotors in the series 5, automatic seat belts in the s5 flywheel is lighter in s5, the front sway bar is thicker in the s4, steering wheel is different
