Can I use this counterwieght?
 
I have to replace the clutch in my 88 nonturbo, so I said what the hay. I'll change the flywheel while I'm at it. Well, it is the ACT Counterwieght I am looking at. Will it work for both turbo and nonturbo? What do you guys think.

Here is a link to the site where I found it. Just plug in the info: MAZDA RX7 86-92 Then under Clutches&Flywheels Then Finally under Flywheels. It is the first one.

based solely on what i see on the page, the counterweight they offer is for both Turbo and N/A. they make a distinction between the '86-'88 engines and the '89-'92 engines, but not between turbo and non-turbo for the flywheels they offer.

Yea, that is what I got from it as well. I emailed them, but they didn't get back to me. I guess I'll email ACT about it. I was hoping someone on here had some experience with it.

You need a counterwieght out of an automatic s4 or s5. turbo flywheels are different then non turbo.

Uh, that's not correct.
The original poster said for his 1988 model.
This means he needs an automatic counterweight from a 1986-1988 model.
A 1989-1991 model WILL NOT WORK.
Counterweights are identical for non-turbo and turbo for Zenki versus Kouki.



turbo flywheels are different then non turbo.
At least you got this right. :)

I got myself a nifty digital scale a few weeks back and ever since I;ve been experimenting and checking out various counterweights and stuff. Since most of the engine counterweights arent marked, its easy to get them confused once you take them off the engine they came on. I usually mark mine, but it'd still be nice to be able to differentiate. SO, I've been weighing them. Here's what I found. This applies to automatic rear counterweights only.

GSLSE s3 11.5 rotors, ctwt weighs 4.30lb
86-8 s4 10.5 rotors, t2 and NA, ctwt weighs 4.04lb
(I havent gotten time to weigh the s5 ctwt I have, so no numbers on that yet, though it SHOULD be the same as FD)
93-95 s6 9.5lb rotors (FD/turbo) cwtw weighs 4.03lb (not enough of a difference to distinguish from the s4)

I compared the s4 and s6 ctwt and can find no difference between them at all in weight or dimension. THe s4 was ordered brand new, and the s6 was removed from a stock original FD core motor, so I trust these results. I plan to weigh the s5 ctwt soon and see what my results are.
