building motor..corner seal?
I just finished putting my t2 motor together, on the rear face of the rear rotor one of the corner seals is a tight fit. I'm using atkins seals and tried three of them and none of them would fit into the grove. The stock ones fit alright once you use a little pressure to first get them in. I couldn't really measure a difference between the seals or grove with a dial guage. At first it was so tight with the atkins seals that if you depress the seal it would just stick flush with the rotor and non spring back up into spec. I took sandpaper starting at 220 working to 500 grit then used rubbing compound for the hell of it to "shrink" the seal. It slides much better. still not as nice as the others but it pops back up and into spec. motor is all together now and I am wondering if I should go back in or not.. is this known for atkins seals to be larger and will the tightness work itself out after running and moving or will it most likely get tighter due to thermal expansion?

if its stuck and the seal itself is new then its your rotor clean it. but u dont want any sticking seals in a new motor

theres also a certani gap thats supose to be between the seal and rotor make sure u dont ahve to much of a gap after sanding

its not a matter of being clean.. its spotless. at first it was actually getting scored by the side seal and apex seal grooves..seal is just too fat all the way around..I think I'm going to crack it open and sand it some more just to be safe since all i have to do is take off the rear plate. thanks

you need to trim your side seal ends!!!
did you use a rebuild kit or possibly mismatched seals if your reusing your old ones. |
Side seals need to be clearanced properly. IIRC, I clearance my side seal to corner seal gap at 0.02in (0.051mm), which is pretty tight.

the corner seals (atkins) were sticking without any of the other seals installed, just want to know if it was alright that I sanded the corner seal (clearance) is fine now.

Can't speak to their stuff, I only use Mazda OEM in my builds when it comes to hard parts, period.

If the corner seals are sticking, check the arch in the corner of the rotor. Make sure it's not bent in on one or both sides. Personally, I would address it on the rotor rather than the seal.

I had nothing but problem with there seals. 2 of the motor that i did with Atkins seals the corner seal did the same thing.The apex seals had rust on them. i personally think there seals are junk. I'm not sure what is up with there corner seals but it looks like the specs are out.
For future reference just buy OEM. Hope that helps. |
