Bucking, Knocking, but no power
I was driving my 84 gsl last summer when after i went to take off after a stop sign, i got terrible response from the car. it went that quick. When i hit the gas, the RPM's creep up the gauge and i have no acceleration. The engine no longer runs smootly and rocks around even at idle. I changed the plugs and plug wires hoping that it was an electrical problem but to no avail. Let me know what i should do next, or if you know any mechanics in central new york.

Hmm, that sounds like my engine yesterday. After a burnout it started running on one rotor. Since I have direct fire, it could have possibly been something to do with that, but I figured it could have been a clogged jet in the carb. I floored it and the engine sounded normal whenever the secondaries would open. I drove it home on one rotor/floored. Drivng slow sucked.
I took the top of the carboff today and saw a buch of garbage in sitting at the bottom of the float bowl. Then when I blew some compressed are through the venturi, a seed popped out of the jet. :) How did it bypass the fuel filter? It looked like your typical seed from a birdseed bird feeder or whatever. The engine ran fine once the blockage was removed. A new better fuel filter is surely needed. As for your engine, let's hope it's something as simple as a clogged jet or other carb issue (flapper valve not opening anymore etc) and not a dead apex seal. |
fuel filter?
dead coil/igniter? |
well tinkered around with it a little more today. changed the fuel filter and cleaned the plugs again which were black already. thinking maybe it was carbon build up from letting it sit so much. i revved the shit out of it as has been reccomended to blow it out of the engine. not a good idea. after running at about 6000 for 20 seconds it made a terrible clank noise. definately a metal on metal noise. so now i have a big problem on my hands that i still have no idea how to fix.

did the motor lockup after the "clank" noise? :( you should have probably tried driving it as opposed to just free-revving.
|
it didnt lock up, but when i let off the gas it just idled and sputtered to a stop. i would have drivin it but i dont have it registered to drive
|
well, i respect your respect for the law so i won't touch that. mine's not registered at the moment either, but i'll steal a lap around the block (way after hours :D) every once in a while, just to move everything around. just throwing that out there ...
when was your last tuneup? anyway, first things first, turn it by hand and see if you still have all six chambers. take what Jeff20B said to heart and fish around the carbie, maybe clean it thoroughly - it can only help. next, i would be inclined to run some Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) through the fuel system and also put some down the throttle bores and turn it a few times by hand. let it sit for a day or two ... while you're waiting, tune it up (except for the plugs, so you don't foul the new ones with the MMO) and try resetting the timing. then try it. how's that? i'm sure someone else may chime in with other suggestions. good luck. |

Man, this guy must be really thankful or something. :)
|
maybe, but i think my computer froze when i was sending it
|
after thinking about it, the majority of the smoke coming from the engine came from the back, could all of this be caused by clutch slip
