Bench Compression Test?

Hi,

Was wondering if anyone knew of a more accurate way to test compression while an engine is out of the car?

I know the simple turn the engine over by hand and count the "chugs" method (whilst engine is out), and know how to do the standard compression test with compression tester (whilst engine is in the car).

Would appreciate any help,

Greg

Bolt up the trans with out the clutch (makes it easier) bolt on the starter, then use jumper cables to connect the positive battery terminal to starter and use the neg cable to ground the motor somewhere. Then either secure the engine, or lift it on a hoist and use a length of wire to connect the positive end of the jumper cable with the relay on the starter. I suggest securing the wire to the solenoid and then touching it to the positve cable so if you drop the wire or you touch another part of the motor it wont short. Also if the engine hasent been dismantled yet chances are it will pump out whats left of oil. Thats how I compression tested my motor when it was out of the car, no problems.

would the manifold need to be on?

All you really need is a bellhousing... and it is actually better that the manifold not be on... when you do a compression test, you are to hold the throttle wide open to let all the air possible into the motor
