air control valve
 

hello all:) today I washed my car 88 gxl and drove to the store. when I returned to my car and started it I noticed smoke coming from the engine bay. I couldn't figure it out so I figured it was injectors or something. In the evening I took a look at the engine and noticed that both sensors wires on the air control valve were competly melted through. I now have reason to believe that when I washed the car, water got into the engine bay and shorted these wires out. What do these sensors control? could I just get two replacements from the j-yard and swap them out? since these wires are fried, how would the car run with out them? any input would be appreciated-thanks in advance---Ren

The car will run just fine without them.......except the emissions will suffer just a bit.

Yes, you can just get a 17mm wrench and screw them out. Each has a poppet and very small spring, so you have to make sure you don't drop them when you screw them out.

There should be a constant 12v on the black/white wire on each one, when the key is to ON. The other wire on each solenoid gets a ground signal from the ECU to operate them at the appropriate time.

The rear one is the split air solenoid. It only opens when you are in fifth gear, whereupon it adds considerable air to the split air pipe to the catalytic converter. More than doubles the normal flow of air.

The front one is the PORT Air Solenoid. When over 20,000 miles has accumulated the solenoid will be energized all the time, adding even more air to the exaust ports than normal. That's the way I read the explanation of the Port air solenoid, anyway.

Were you washing the engine bay?

Small correction on the working of the PORT AIR SOLENOID It will be energized all the time at idle, but once you start driving, it wil be de-energized if your accelerating, then energize as you let off the gas. Mostly de-energized while driving.

The more I think about it, if you cooked the wiring, you should have blown the fuse. Which would be the 30 amp one in the engine bay. It also feeds all the other solenoids in the engine bay, switching, relief, port, bac, prcv etc.

So the performance of the car should be effected, just not by the two items where you found the cooked wires. Check the fuses in the engine bay.

thanks for the responses. went to the junk yard and replaced them for $1.80 each:) I checked the fuse on the engine bay and there all fine no blown fuses? I was washing the engine bay earlier that day. I was trying my best to use minimal water . Thanks again---Ren
