86 GXL "floods out" won't restart
 

I have a 1986 Mazda RX-7 GXL non-turbo & cannot find a rotary engine mechanic anywhere near where I live, Biloxi, Mississippi.

The car is in really great shape, ~140,000 miles, put in a new engine at about 110,000 miles, at a Mazda dealership, but now it would start fine & would run at speed, but had a problem where the engine would stall out anytime I took my foot off the gas.

Took it to just a local mechanic who “hoped” he could fix it, but he couldn’t. Now though the local mechanic told me the gas in the gas tank had gone bad, he dropped the tank, cleaned it & reinstalled it. Now he tells me the car will start, but after it runs a bit, it will “flood out”, his words, quit running & won’t restart.

Has anyone had these sorts of problems before & if so what were the parts involved that needed repair or replacement? Any advice at all would be greatly welcomed!!!

Although I totally love the car, I am in no way at all a car guy, although I have changed spark plugs, spark plug wires & once helped another guy replace the pulse dampener & the sending unit, that’s about it for fixing a car for me.

Also, if anyone knows of a “real” rotary engine mechanic, Mobile, Alabama to New Orleans, that would b valuable information, too.

In the very worse case I’d also be interested to know if anyone would b interested in buying a really nice, well maintained, 1986 RX-7 GXL non-turbo that has problems.

welcome to the board. :)

check the Regional forum for your area and see if you can locate a mechanic that is competent and trustworthy when it comes to rotaries. that should be your first piece of business since you're not going to be working on it yourself.

it may be a good idea to download a copy of the FSM anyway though. even if you're not working, you can stay in the loop or have a reference at hand.

I won't assume anything else was done besides the tank, so did he change the filters (in-tank and line)? also, did he get the injectors done? the "bad" gas could have wreaked havoc on the fuel system.
