300 zx engine in 2nd gen RX7 GSL

Hay one pulled this stunt? What's the results? I'm thinking of doing it because I just happen to have the parts.

z31 or z32?
z31 is an inline 6 and i don't think that will work very well on the fc.
z32 is too heavy and in most cases hard to work on.

You hit it right on the head with that one. I had to pull out a z32 engine two times and I can tell you it is a nightmare. Plus I know it barely fits inside the Z, so unless the fc engine bay is bigger (I dont know if it is or not) then it wont fit.

The Z31 is a V6 Vg30 E and there is actually a kit available to do the swap. 600 bucks for the top package... hood closes!

I have a spare Z31 motor. complete with harness, ecu etc, if you need a spare. Came out of an 87 that I parted out to finish up my 85.

RETed 06-14-06 06:36 AM

It's fricken too heavy.
It will screw up the handling of the FC.
WTF is a "2nd gen GSL"?
Do you mean "GXL"?

VG30DET with a transmission it weighs about 14 more lbs than a SBC with a transmission, and being a V6 should be shorter overall.

Considering everyone SHOULD have known for at least the past 6 years the v8 (while 14 lbs ligther, as if that means a god damn thing, is longer....) doesnt upset the balance, how would a shorter motor do so?

The only real concern is width and height for getting it mounted under the hood, why youd use that instead of arguably better turbo v6 options like the 3.8 GM motor, and mounts.

IIRC Grant is selling VG30mounts that bolt right in, but its not as cost effective as other swaps, and not as popular.

RX7 RAGE 06-14-06 09:38 AM

just drop an ls1 in.

Raoc435 06-18-06 02:40 AM

A 454 would be nice, no replacement for displacement, I'm currently torn I can't decide to do a 454 supercharged monster with a 150 shot in my bat man camaro or a 20b with a fat turbo in my 88fc.

SuIcIdeKiNg- 06-18-06 02:49 AM

that motor is kinda hard to work around its so bulky id rather put what Raoc435 said 454 or in a 1jz if ur into toyotas

noob thread ftl...

Serious.... if you want a VG30, get a Nissan. BTW, VG30E from the Z32 is a V6 3.0L SOHC. The VG30DETT from the Z32 is a V6 3.0L DOHC Twin-Turbo. Nissan's last inline motors for US performance applications were the L-series from the 240/260/280 Z-cars.

It is hard to get a positive reception to ideas such as this, the RX-7 was meant to carry a rotary, if you dont want a rotary, buy a Porsche 944, it looks similar and no one will care what engine you cram into it.

Ok let me try to clean things up. I know this is old but i hate wrong info.

the VG30E and VG30ET came in the z31 300ZX Both are amazing engines that can handle 500ish hp stock regardless of boost level (600 ish if you do head work)

The VG30DETT is the elctronical nightmare nissan put in the z32. The DETT is less responsive and weaker than it's older brother the SOHC VG30E. Also it is much much cheaper to modify the SOHC.

bmwrx7man 07-05-06 01:39 PM

its not weaker than the old one il tell u right now

Again sorry to bring back a older thread but I wanted to correct some mistakes.

You are correct on the VG30E(T) engines being stout, they can handling 500+HP on the stock internals. But you are wrong on the VG30DETT, it is not a "electronic nightmare", and it is MORE responsive and MORE stout then the VG30E(T). The DETT is capable of holding near 700RWHP on a fully stock engine. Though you are right the SOHC is much cheaper to modify then the DOHC.
