2nd gen blown engine?
Hey,
I bought an 89 Turbo II not even a week ago and I fear that I may have already popped an apex seal. Earlier tonight I was doing a light pull in 2nd gear at maybe half throttle. The Previous Owner put straight pipes on the car and didn't upgrade the fuel pump, so I was doing my best to not overboost. I was boosting like ~6-8 psi. The car has a FCD. So I shift to third and instead of hearing the BOV I hear a nasty pop from the engine bay. moments later the car begins to lose power and ultimately dies. Now when I go to turn on the engine, it'll immediately die. The starter starts the motor, but instead of going to idle it just dies. It's late so I haven't had a chance to compression test the engine. It seems like a blown apex seal, does anybody else have any ideas? I bought this car like a week ago and can't yet afford a rebuild. I'm heartbroken. |
sounds more like the boost blew off a hose somewhare and now you have unmetered air leak = stall
LOOK if you cant see anything, disconnect the EGI fuse , pull the plugs , crank the engine and listen for the 6 even pulses 6 pulses, no gaps = AOK |
Thanks for the reply!
I did do a once over of the hose couplings, but given the stress of the situation, it's very, very possible that I didn't look hard enough. Hopefully everything goes better than expected. |
Thank goodness, it was just a popped hose coupling.
In my defense, it was the one that goes into the block and it was dark, haha. Oh man I look like a total noob. Thanks guys! |
snap !
okies,, hope you take the hint and go the at least the realtek chip and a bigger pump for those ( not so ) little boost spikes PS FCD ( depending which brand ) is usually an arse of a thing,,and often can make a mess of all the normal running boost curve - best to move straight to a realtek chip or a decent ECU like haltech or power FC |
oh definitely. I've been trying to drive gingerly while I save up for the new pump and the ECU, but it looks like i'll have to be even more careful.

You would actually be better off removing the FCD completely. Since you're running stock boost ~7.5 psi max, there's no need for it. If you have no additional fuel provisions, all the FCD will do is allow you to exceed safe boost levels. I'll take the chance of hitting fuel cut during boost creep over getting detonation due to a lean mixture any day.
You could do an Rtek 1.7 chip, a couple 720 or 750cc injectors and a used FD fuel pump for around $300. Wastegate porting would be helpful too: http://fc3spro.com/TECH/HOWTO/ZWG/zwg.html. |
yep, i hit boost cut on more than a few occasions when i was modding my car way back and it never caused any real harm to the engine.
FCDs belong in the garbage can, along with the stock ECU if you plan on pushing it that hard anyways. |
sounds good, guys. I'll take out the FCD once the weather clears up.
Thanks for the advice! |
