1980 Carb Question
 

First of all I want to thank everyone that helped me with figguring out my problem with my 1980 Rx7. The motor is a 12a with a Nikki Carb and a Header, No other engine upgrade. It would not crank ,and stay running it had been sitting up for about a year. Everyone that posted said it would probably the carb, so I tried to do it myself. yesterday I got it back on the car and turned the switch on and I went around to check to make sure I didnt have any leaks and the gas was just pouring down the inside of the carb. So this morning I got back out there and pulled the top off and checked the floats, and adjusted them just slightly. Also I checked to make sure the needle and seat were shutting the fuel off. So I was able to get the engine to start but it goes from 0 RPM to 7000 RPM right off the bat. I put the idle adj screw back the same amout of turns that I took it out. Do I need to pull the carb back off. To check to see if the butterfly is stuck.

I forgot to say but this morning when I put the top back on it quit leaking when I turned the switch on.

have u got the return springs back on right?

No kinks in any of the cables that attach to the carb? Make sure that the linkage moves freely, and isn't getting wedged open for some reason.

If the fuel continues to flow into the carb uncontrollably, then try banging on the top of the carb with something akin to a "plastic hammer". Something that won't damage the carb. The idea is to shake loose the needles and get them to seat properly.

Another possibility is that the floats aren't installed correctly. This can cause them to hang up. You have to be very careful of their placement where they attach/hang.

one other thing since ken mentioned the throttle cable. make sure u haven't set the 2 jam nuts so that the cable is actually holding the throttle blades open.

Finally got it, There was a cable problem too, but the main problem I saw was the butterfly was open about 3/8 The linkage on the front of the carb had gotten bent. It came down to around 3k RPM then I found the cable it wasnt sitting in the bracket correctly. Thanks for all your help I was really hopeing that I wouldnt have to tear it back down again.
