13b year differences and models it came in?

I am starting to research the swap of a 13b into a old datsun 510 and I am noticing cars on the web that have this swap seem to have used old 13b motors? I am wondering if there is a difference from the new 13bs in the turbo IIs? I am guessing maybe easier to fit?

For example:
http://www.bryanf.com/mycars/yf/index.htm

car owner above stated he used a 13b from an rx4

Another:
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Downs/4941/

owner above said he used a 13b from 1978 but he used turbo II harness, injectors etc?

Also any other info you guys wanna add before I go shopping for a motor feel free to let me know

there are several different 13b's
74-75 1st years, bigger ports, black painted irons, and i think the big mazda script on the rotor housings. the casting ##'s are 1757. they came in rx4,5 and the truck, hard to find the racers have used them for years.
76-78 smaller ports (can be ported to 74-75), other wise identical, came in the same cars
78-83 in 78 all the rotary engines got nitrided side housings (non painted), otherwise the same as 76-78 except they were not in any us models
84-85 was in the top of the line gsl-se, it got updated rotor housings, and the new 6 port intake; where they put a rotating valve in the a new secondary port (its kinda like v tech)
86-88 non turbo: still 6 port, they moved the water seals into the side housings from the rotor housings, and the engines also got lighter rotors. the motor mounts were moved to the center housing
86-88 turbo: 4 port again, really low compression rotors (8.5:1), bigger oil pump
89-91 non turbo: 6 port, lighter high compression rotors
89-91 turbo: lighter rotors like the na but lower compression (9.0:1)
89-96 cosmo : huge port runners, twin turbo
92-01 rx-7: larger ports, higher oil pressure, engine mounts moved to the rear housing, twin turbos

The 86-88 Turbo had a 4 port? Correct me if I'm wrong but I think my 88T2 has a 6 port. I'm not at my home comp to check my FSM, but I coulda swore it has the 6 port. Also... how does the 13B-REW produce a higher oil pressure? What's different about the oil system on it? I'm not overly knowledgable about the differences, but I've always wondered what set the REW apart from the BT (aside from the TWIN turbo's). :)

hey rotorhad -
well, i can't stay here and tell you what YOU have under your hood in Cali, and i know of many people who have turbocharged 6-port engines, but ...

let's just say this ... if your car is a factory T2, then it started it's life as a 4-port and someone switched up on you down the line.

j9fd3s is right with all of what he said, but i'm a little unclear about the '78-'83 ... not sure if you meant that 13B's were being imported here during that time or not ... i know that other parts of the world got the cosmos, but no 13B's made it here between '79 and '83 - there's a gap. someone pleeeease correct me, if i am wrong, but that's what i read ...

'74-'78 and then it continues '84-'85 for the old style 13B's (water o-rings in the rotor housings, 2-piece 3mm apex seals, etc.)

as for projectsupra, i'd say go with the newest 13B that you can find. the '89-'92 engine have the lightest parts and the highest compression ratios. and all you need are the end plates from a T2 to make a 4-port , if you don't plan to use a turbo in the 510.

if you ARE planning to go with a turbo, just get the newest 13B-T you can get your hands on. again, the '89-'96 engine have the lightest parts and higher compression, but that doesn't mean that you can't build a monster that is just as powerful and reliable with the '86-'88 hardware. (the 13B-REW uses the same basic block as the '89-'91 and that's why i lumped all those years together)

just consult a knowledgable source before you go mixing rotors and rotor housings.

hope this helps ...

oh yeah ...
and mounting points ... i don't know which suits a 510 better, but all engines from '86 on are mounted from the center, however, if you need it mounted from the front, then get a '84-'85 front cover, but i'm not sure if the front housings made after 1993 will fit the '84-'85 front housing because of the oil pump differences)

anyone out that knows the answer to that one? i'd like to know myself ...

yeah the 78-83 13b's weren't imported here, and i forgot the 81-83? 6 port 12a too. stay away from that one unless its 100% complete. they also were not imported

Diabolical1: I must have had my head up my butt or something. I don't know why I always thought that the T2 was a 6 port :dunce:

diabolical1 06-30-02 01:03 PM

hehehehe :D

that was funny ... don't worry about it, i had a light installed in my butt for the times when my head finds its way in there ... (bad joke, i know) :D

but seriously, that's why i like this place (the forums). i've been studying rotaries and messing around with them for about 11 years, and i've still learned a few things since i joined this site/club.

peace

I rembmer reading somewhere on the forum that the 13B-REW had a different coating on the inside of the rotor housing than the 13BT, and the coating on the 13B-REW produces a lot less friction. It's probably one reason why you don't hear too many people mention anything about oil consumption on FDs.

This is a bit of misdirection here...
Mazda knew about an inadequate oil injection problem with the Zenki FD's (all US models), and the oil injectors were eventually upgraded in the Japan (Chuki?) Kouki FD's.&nbsp FD's run only two oil injectors for the entire engine, versus four oil injectors from previous FC models.&nbsp This inadequate oil injection caused premature rotor housing wear on the early Zenki FD's...

the oil injectors were updated for the 99 models, N3G1-14-631. they also changed the passage in the rotor housing that the oin injector screws into. the fd rotor housings are usually not reusable after 50-60k miles.

The early 12a and 13b engines from pre-75 had 6mm carbon apex seals. Try to find those now.

2-3 years ago i was able to get everything except the rotor housings new from mazda for a 73 12a.
