Another newbie to the board. I just purchased a 13B from ebay from an 1986-1988 Rx-7. I am wanting to either update it to put into a 3rd gen, not yet accquired, or put in the turbo II setup, either way it is getting turbo. I am ready to spend lots of time and money on this engine but need some help on suggestions for getting the most power out of it. Do Turbo II's have twin turbo's? I know a popular mod when rebuilding is street porting and installing 3mm apex seals. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Randon 61

I hate to say it but you don't want to put that motor in a 3rd gen. There are too many differences between the 2nd gen and 3rd gen engines. Motor mounts, oil metering system, intake manifolds, etc, etc, etc... It is not a simple swap by any means. The 3rd gen engines flow way more air anyways. It will be a step backwards. The Turbo II is a 'twin scroll' single turbo. It flows enough air for about 300 fwhp max and that is really pushing it pretty hard. The stock twins on the 3rd gen can get almost 400 fwhp but they ar small and unreliable. In order to install 3mm apex seals you have to have the rotors milled out to the correct size which costs money. There are a couple of different trains of thought as to which size is really better or needed. I prefer the 2mm seals even for fairly high horsepower levels but others like the 3mm. Its a matter of personal opinion. If the engine is built well and tuned properly then the 2mm seals should never be a problem. Thee are many different aspects of 'street porting'. That is just a matter of searching the internet for info on different styles. Without a turbo/intercooler upgrade, ecu, intake, and exhaust, I wouldn't be too concerned about porting it. Do everything else first.

I am willing to put a lot of money into this project and am looking for max hp. Since I am going to have to rebuild this motor anyway i was wanting to start from the inside and work my way out like start with porting it and then something such as putting twin turbo on it. I am in no big hurry for it to be done, that way I dont really have to stay within a budget.

You are really going out of your way to make it a high budget project.

RotaryGod has it right. What you have would be a step back in technology. It is fairly popular for 2nd Gen owners to yank out the motor you just bought and replace it with the motor from a 3rd Gen.

If you want max horsepower then start with the motor that comes in the 3rd generation RX-7. There are a laundry list of reasons why it can produce more and reliable horsepower over the motor you just bought.

If the motor you bought is a non turbo block then you really can't throw much boost to it because of the high compression.

Spending alot of money on a engine and car is very easy to do! however there is a smart way and a not so smart way to do things. It looks like you might be trying the latter of the two(no offense).


There are alot of differences in engines, especially when it comes to turbocharging!

If you want plan on spending "alot" of money in this engine then why did you buy a used one from the parts trader to start with. For the money you have to put in that engine to rebuild it and change apex seal size, you could have bought a rebuilt engine and saved the trouble.
