12a carb/vac whine? VIDEO 83 fb
Hey guys,
Unfortunate I have to introduce myself this way, but just picked this 83 gsl a couple weeks back, and was running great, until started getting this going: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSC_9I1C9w0 Runs/sounds like that at idle, and will hardly stay running. I can keep it going by gassing it and it drives fairly normally (although a lot more backfiring than normal), but I don't want to take it too far like this. I'm thinking some kind of vacuum leak but wanted to see what all you expert folk thought. It's fairly annoying, and is very apparently coming from the intake/carb. Took the cover off and the noise got louder, per the video. thanks for the help in advance. |
welcome to the board. :)
if memory serves, that's the noise the air pump makes when disconnected. check that. were you working/exploring anything in or around the passenger side of the engine bay since you got the car? |

Thank you for the warm welcome! I haven't really done anything but check fluids, made sure all hoses were connected... I'll look into that after work if that's the case. Thanks. |
The previous owner removed the air pump. Seems like a common thing by looking into it. Def not keen to rotaries, let alone anything not fuel injected (been awhile since i worked with grandpa on his trucks/tractors lol)
Found the source of the loud noise: it is made silent when this hose is plugged. I can't quite tell what the other end of the hose goes into, however. Little unit that sits right below the carb adjustment knob. Car runs fine above 2.5-3k. Anyone have any clue? https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...8769b5eebc.jpg |
my second guess: 81-85 12A Shutter Valve
