12A or 13B Rotary in a Lotus Europa
 

I am looking at swapping a 12A rotary into a Lotus Europa. I think I prefer the 12A because I would like a carburated rotary with minimal electronic controls. I see a stock 79-85 12A gives 105 hp. What can I expect hp wise if I removed all emissions items, added a good carb, had motor street ported and added a good flowing exhaust?

If I did the exact same mods above to a 85-88 13B, what kind of hp would I be able to expect? I want to stay away from any computer controls though.

My goal is to get between 175-200hp reliably if possible.

A long time ago, I saw a rotary powered Europa at an autocross in richmond. He was a member of the local area autocross club down there. If you were to locate the club online, i bet they could hook you up w/ the guy. Bear in mind it was about 12 years ago, but i bet that guy still autocrosses, wether he has a new car or not----people don't go anywhere around there. He told be his had about 180 hp at the time.

I wish I knew where I saw it but a couple of years ago there was a magazine article on a company that built a rotary Europa. I may have the info in print lying around somewhere. I'll have to go dig it up. It had a 3rd gen 13B-REW complete with turbos tuned to about 300hp. Looked fast.

You can get a variety of carb manifolds for the 13B also.. to run down & side draft webers, mostly. There were quite a few on eBay last month. I think you'll have to work real hard to get more than 180 HP from a 12a. As far as N/A 13B's go, there's more to it. If you can assemble your engine, you can go after the 89-91 rotors (lighter & more compression) and put them with turbo housings (which flow better) and look for somewhere around 245. I know RX-Midget runs a carbed 13B in his midget.. might want to ask him more about his setup.

there was (is?) one around here that used to autocross, it had a 74-78 13b with a turbo. the uy didn't know anything about the car though.
my r100 with a street port 12a and a 48ida weber is supposed to do about 180rwhp, they did an rx3 with an identical setup except it was 13b that did 200rwhp
