$600 part help!
 

My uncle was talking about another guy that restored a RX-7. I'm not sure what year it was, but he warned me about a part that cost $600 canadian to buy and could only be bought from the dealer. Can anyone clear this up for me. I can't think of anything that could cost this much besides new rotors, rotor housings, or other main parts. All years apply.

I'm thinking about buying a 1985 GSL-SE. Do I have to worry about this part on this car?

EDIT: Do I have to worry about any overly expensive parts on an 85 GSL-SE?

Many parts on the 7s are that much and much more . Get a used car have fun and hunt used parts if needed. Or stay home and save your money . If you want to dance you must pay the fiddler .

Thanx for the info, but my uncle said that the guy could ONLY get the part from the DEALER. Thanks, and if anyone has any more info that would help.

EDIT: I forgot that he also said that it was some type of sensor or something.

I was looking at atlantarx7.com and they seem almost too cheap. A rotor for a 13B engine for 75 bucks??? These are either very bad parts or they are loosing a ton of money on them. Rotor housings for 13B engine are only 150 bucks. WTF? I don't know if I can trust these people. I see that racing beat sells rotor housings for $1200. Huge difference. Does anyone have any experience with them?

350 is the average price for a new houseing

atlantarx7 is used parts, but about the only place i trust to send me a decent used houseing

All of the new housings I've seen for sale online are going for $400-500. Where could I find new ones for $350? I have a siezed engine and am afraid I damaged the housing trying to bust the motor loose. I'll be pulling it later today to find out.

Thanks for the info. I think I could really easily get that RX-7 now. It has some damage to the body, and i'm going to offer the guy $700 for it.

The car is a 1985 GSL-SE. It needs new front and rear bumpers, new front air dam, new passenger side fender, new passenger side head light assembly, and new drivers side brake light assembly. There are a few other things like the filler piece that goes between the headlights that is badly damaged, but I have some aluminum to make a new one (hopefully). That is about it for the body. It has little rust, but a very, very cheap paint job. You can see where they taped around the rear glass hinges. On the interior, it just needs a few touchups and the passenger seat bolted down properly.

This is all assuming the dealer will accept $700. If not I will go to $800 as my final offer. The car has been sitting for about 8 months at least. I'd bet the last time it was started was when I looked at it about 4 weeks ago. Took a lot of cranking, but when it did fire up, it idled like a dream. Reved pretty good, but wanted to stall after reving. Is this a problem I should worry about, or is it just a side affect of sitting so long?

The car will need a tune up after its been sitting. Check the compression (if you don't know how to check the compression on a rotary let me know and I can tell you how.) Change all the fluids, spark plugs and plug wires. If you don't already have one, get a Haynes manual and if you can find one, get the Factory Service Manual (FSM). They are available for 2nd Gen RX-7s online for free, but I don't know about the 1st gen cars. Stalling while the RPMs are decelerating isn't normal.

As for a part that can only be found at the dealer, I don't know of anything like that. There are many people who make and sell all the engine parts, and/or suitable substitute components for the electronics and stuff. There may be some parts that are only available through Mazda, but all the high dollar parts like the engines and trannys can be found elsewhere. If they do emissions testing in your area, you will need to keep all the emissions equipment. Some of those sensors can be a rip off, but like someone else mentioned, you can find functioning used one for cheaper.

Finally, go to this web site and read through it. The site belongs to one of our members (he is Canadian too) and was written toward the 2nd gen RX-7, but a lot of the info about checking a car before you buy it will be useful to you since you are considering buying a RX-7.

Okay, housings for my 13BT are $420 from them. I guess the only ones that are $350 new are for the 12A, so maybe that's why I never saw them that cheap. ;) Thanks anyway.

i have a 12a so thats what i was thinking of anyways LOL

I have read everything on that site.

When I had the car running it was running for about 5 min. The car had a nice solid idle to it when it was idleing. It didn't actually stall, just acted like it was going to after a little rev to 3000 rpm. It has new ignitors, plugs and plug wires, all of which are the recomended kind.

Thanks for the help. In a few weeks I will be going to the guy to talk about it more. I can almost guarantee that it will be there because it isn't exactly the nicest car to look at.

don't worry parts are pretty easy to find and most of us here help eachother out in finding what you need.

The dealer is never the only place to get parts, call any mazda shop like mazdee's/a-spec/magnus and they usually have what you need on a shelf for CHEAP!
