Yes please :)

So are they ready to go or do we need two more years to over-engineer and consult with NASA on designing them... not pointing any fingers.

Slevin77 09-07-10 11:56 AM

Bakemono7 09-07-10 12:04 PM

Yes, the production run is ready to go  with a two and a half week turn around from the day we say go :icon_tup: Since the handles can only be made in large quantities we will only be doing one large production run.

The cost will be in the low 300 range (which is still cheaper than buying a new plastic one from ray, let alone @ list price from mazda... and all you get for that is another broken plastic handle in a matter of time).

yeah to be honest the stock ones are really poorly designed. 93 is the worst. in 94 they added two thin vertical plastic ribs to the mold but the design was still completely flawed cause the handle was still extremely thin in the places where it would flex. The later RHD handles for the late Japanese FD's were redesigned and don't suffer from these issues but, they are RHD so they don't do us any good.

If you compare the molds of the earlier ones to the later ones mazda was aware that there was a problem (the casting marks are the same on both so you can see where they just added some material in hopes of fixing the problem but they didn't do nearly enough.) This is an identical reproduction in aluminum so this will solve the problem once and for all. the stock cover is easily reapplied from your old plastic handle for a 100% identical OEM stock look, or they can be covered in any stlye of leather, vinyl, carbon fiber, etc... the sky is the limit on what you could do with a cover, but personally I prefer reusing the stock cover for a completely OEM look.

I'll post some pics in a bit of what it looks like with a dimpled leather cover :)

I know low volume custom units are expensive to make, but over $300 for a small piece of metal is too rich for my blood. At the moment anyways. ;(

Call up Malloy and see what they charge for a small piece of plastic.

johgar 09-07-10 11:42 PM

OK, this is getting rediculous.
First, Dual oil cooler kit (Roughly $1000). Then, the HID headlight GB (About $850). After that, LED taillight ($400). Now...this! When will this end????? I am very upset.
Do I need to do direct deposit for my paycheck to you guys?

Please put me in for one. :D

Thanks
Daniels

Yes, very much so. To make this part a reality, the cost on our end was extremely expensive as well. I wont get into specific numbers, but suffice to say, it's in the mid THOUSANDS :icon_tup: Custom parts ain't cheap to make, and it's not like the FD is a high volume car ;) or there is lots of competition making this handle  People have been asking for this for YEARS with nothing ever produced... till now.

Like Scrub said, it's actually cheaper than Mazda's plastic replacement  Considering the cost on our end, I thought we were actually coming in pretty low on the price. It's not like you or I could hand whittle these in a half day from a block of aluminum. I'm honestly not trying to give a "sales pitch" or "push parts" (we are not sales people, we are FD enthusiasts) but I just wanted to make it clear that more goes into making this than a small piece of metal.

We probably should just sponsor you... that would probably be easier on both of us LOL

twinsinside 09-08-10 01:53 AM

Are you doing both RHD and LHD handles?

I'm gonna wrap mine in christmas lights or something in celebration.

You should engrave them with "oh $hit emergency handle". I'd lol every time I got in the car.

efinimazda 09-08-10 03:47 AM

^+1 for rhd

I agree with you completely. Mazda charging $300+ for the plastic that will just break again is horrible. Knowing my luck though, my door handle will break after this group buy has ended and I'll be kicking myself for not spending $300+ on this custom metal piece!

All of these beautiful custom part's like aluminum strut tower braces and LED tail light's, I am running out of money. :(

They don't call FD's money pits for nothing. Why do you think Sakebomb exists? To fund their own money pits :)

By the way, Boooo on your mold :(

Yup ;) every cent I scrounge together goes back into my FD :D It's a vicious cycle where the money is never put to good use... just circulated back around the RX7 community

We wish hahaha. Most of our profits go into creating new products actually. I've re-invested profits since we first started :)
