NEWs after our relief trip to the North:

Just arrived at Shizuoka after a non stop 26h journey to Takata city, east from Ichinoseki in Iwate prefecture. The town was almost entirely destroyed like most of the cities close to the shore in this part of Japan. Describing the level of destruction is almost impossible but all that remains is a pile of various things, some of enormous mess of cars, wood, plastic cans, furniture, etc...

Nothing remains, absolutely nothing... I took a couple of pictures and videos but I decided not to publish them in respect of the fantastic and courageous people I've met during this trip. First of all a HUGE thanks to Beau and his buddy who made an admirable job over there. Their respect and devotion should be an example for every "gaikokujin" of Japan. And of course all our thought to the people of Takata and every other cities in the same situation. Help still cannot reach every little town or villages and People lack Kerosene for the cremation of their dead. We brought nearly 1 ton of supplies but unfortunately, as Japaneses rules are very strict with donation and caritative aids, we finally, Shinichiro, Shuhei and I paid everything that was in our truck ourselves. We would have be able to give more but the people of Takata needed anything than can be sent and above all to see that people of Japan didn't forget them. It's difficult to keep cool when you see what we saw but as we had to, we just did what we had to do. We feel lucky for having the chance to give and help a little and this will definitely be one of the most important thing ever done in my life.

I've met fantastic pepole in the persons of Beau and Ed from Bungy Japan who coordinated this trip. At the end 6 vehicles transported 9 tons of supplies to the North. This experience will definitely leave a mark in my heart until my last breath. People here cope with this with so much dignity that is a huge example for everyone. No riots, no violence, no anger. Just courage and fighting spirit, this the Japan I love, this is Japan...

I just noticed your post, I think it is great you guys made the trip up there to help them out.

I couple of us in Okinawa are planing a trip up there on april 15 16 17 or on 22 23 24. fly to henada then get a rental van from yokosuka base and pack it full and take it up there, cook food and pass it out. We wanna hit some of the small places that dont get the much help right now looking at north part of iwate

Does anyone know if you still get expressway free passes when you rent a car at yokosuka?

If it is an onbase rental, you get free toll passes. As far as I know, it doesn't matter from which base.

I would imagine that most bases are going to have areas they consider "off limits". The base I am on (in western Japan), does not allow its rentals to go East of Osaka...

I would inquire with the rental company before you arrive and have no rides to go North.

called the base car rental on yokosuka. cant go that far north or east. Said i can go as far north as the hot springs at Nikko / toguchi and east around Narita airport area.

So going to look into other ways to get out and up there.
