Yet another track car...

Just a few pics on another project. They're from earlier this year. Some additions since then but a good idea of where it's headed. It's for me and my sons to teach them some driving skills. We are planning on racing it in NASA events and Pro Auto Sports here in AZ locally. There's a 85 GSL-SE right behind this one for a build also.

More pics soon. Plumbed it tonight. Cooling module done. Wiring done. Moving along nicely.
Looked for www.azrx7.com and came up empty. Send me a link. Like to meet some AZ guys with Mazdas. I do alot of NA stuff since that is what I do.

the forum will be under a new owner soon and are working on getting the domain issues sorted out :)

Gurew 07-30-10 01:24 PM

btw who did you cage, did a pretty fantastic job on the coping, not much gap at all. how do you plan to weld it? mig or tig?

gawdodirt 07-30-10 02:51 PM

Thanks for the compliments. I do all my own work. Machine work, tubing, engine, welding. I already MIG welded the cage. The chassis was too much work to clean it up enough for TIG. I can TIG aluminum really well, but have trouble welding steel upside down.
There are more pics in the gallery. I'll get more tonight.
Thanks!

What Megaphone is that?

gawdodirt 08-22-10 06:45 PM

It's from Burns stainless. They call it a "transition." Kind of a mini megaphone and a really good idea as most all high end headers have a megaphone or transition. This header is for a street/bridge port. The next one will be for a P-port and much shorter.

what size does it go from to ?

Mine go from 2" to 3".

dj55b 08-23-10 09:55 PM

ah okay, I bought mine from there too but I went with a 2.5 to 3 so its a little shorter. I also went with the 321 SS. I wanted a longer one so less angle but couldn't find anything at a reasonable price.

Another thing I did differently is cut the straight part out of it and attached it from the part it megaphones directly. From reading around that's the way it should of been.

Here's my thread on all my stuff :

gawdodirt 08-24-10 04:03 PM

Cool. Mine did not have a straight part. It was less of a taper, but not straight. More pics...

Looks like its coming along quite well.

gawdodirt 09-01-10 02:07 PM

Thanks! Just found out alot about Mazda drive shafts ; by accident. They're not usually rebuildable, with staked u-joints! Auto Zone did have replacement joints for the TII. Local shop for driveshafts wanted my old shaft and $360 for a new rebuildable shaft. Told him I didn't have an old one , he said that it might be a little bit more.

http://www.driveshaftspecialist.com/default.html

These guys only wanted $279.95 for the same thing delivered to my door with free shipping.
All U.S parts .

Updates!!

Had the car out at an ASA event and never had to turn a wrench. Very stable and predictable. The chassis can use a whole lot of power. Everything worked ver well. I need some seat time !

Will be racing the PAS/ASA Turkey Day Enduro at Firebird raceway this weekend!

Nice to hear ... what kind of power levels do you think you're at? What kind and size tires are you running?

Len-Len 11-22-10 04:53 PM

Nice. I admire your fab skills

Thanks! Right now, I'm learning about the car with a street port at about 160-175 hp or so. I'm running Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec 205/50 R16 .

I have a Peripheral Port ready, just have to make a manifold. That will be at least 260 hp, I'm hoping.

yay a new rotary buddy here in Az. Nice fab skills, any more pics of the dash?

gawdodirt 11-24-10 11:19 AM

In my gallery are quite a few.

Nice to meet you . I'm Carl in Gilbert at Lindsay and Pecos.

Next time you need a driveshaft done, go here for U joints

http://www.rockforddriveline.com/

I've used them for years on many cars for on track and off. Easy to rebuild yourself really, I use a torch to make the center of the old joint disappear, tap the caps in, clean the burrs with a die grinder, install new joints.

infinite7z 02-18-11 01:06 AM

so any updates?

You bet! Ran the car 4 times since Thanksgiving. Car was flawless. Minor tuning with air pressure, but did not turn a wrench. Found the balance and limits. With the Eibach springs and sway bars, it was completely square and could be urged to go over steer or understeer with minor throttle.
Now it's got a Peripheral port, to see where it will go now. Very happy that it was so close out of the box. I did see that I could use some slicks to take the cornering to the next level. The PP will handle the straight line speeds.
Changed to a smaller steering wheel and Sparco driver seat.

hmm nice build

IO_303 03-08-11 10:08 PM

Looks really nice.

I noticed you are using what looks like an engine mount from a FB in a FC. Is that something you made yourself or is that available somewhere.

gawdodirt 03-09-11 06:18 PM

Thanks for the kind words! I made the mount. It's a combination of a stock FB and 4130 tubing with the urethane mounts on the end. All tig welded.

GD

gawdodirt 03-16-11 04:12 PM

Friend of mine took this and posted it on YOUtube.

It's the preipheral port that is in the engine stand in my gallery. It's in and runs fine. It's our new bullet.:-)

By the way, that tinny rattle is a loose exhaust insert.

Thanks!
