My newest project teaser.

So I work at a machine shop that does CNC machining in aluminum and plastic, specializing in prototyping. I've met a few interesting people along the way that actually makes this kind of a fun project...

I figure I can throw a few pictures here and there to see if this is actually feasible. Note, this is not an interest thread or anything like that, but more showing steps along the journey before I actually pull the trigger and make something that would warrant an interest thread. The goal at the end of what will probably be a year + long project that can be ended at a moment's notice, will be injection molded ABS pieces, converting the JDM arm rest from RHD to LHD.

3D scanned

Next step comes the reverse engineering phase, making sure everything is to scale, etc. This is a super high res scan of the bottom part of the arm rest. Basically, this is all raw data that requires me to define a number of points on there manually and convert it into something that can be machined. I just thought it would be kinda cool to show you guys what 3D scanners are capable of producing nowadays. This particular scanner is supposed to get accuracy up to about 0.002-3" Not pictured, but the 3D scan I have actually captured the serial number on the bottom of the tray as well, in pretty good detail.

Again, this may never come to fruition, and I don't want anyone to get their hopes up, especially when I start posting pictures of all the other pieces I'm getting scanned at the same time. I just figured there's a whole bunch of really cool, new technology out there that is massively changing the game as it relates to our cars. And, given that I get access to play with a 5-axis CNC that we don't really use too often, complete with our own proprietary system used to make CAM programming super easy, this is the best time to actually make this happen. =P
