making a ast

I was wondering if anyone here has made an ast, or know what is inside them???? I just dont want to buy one when i know i could just make one for cheaper. It looks pretty basic but if anyone has any intput i would love to hear it!

i find it hard to believe no one has ever tried to make one, I dont want to have to cutt mine in half and see what the heck is in it.

Not much in there. I bought one a couple years back that was just an aluminum tube with a top and bottom welded onto it like a catch can. But I wound up not installing it and just bypassed the whole thing. Running fine since then.

I built one.

Probably ~$50 in materials.

Wow sweet looks great man i love it when someone just dives into the fabrication! Where did you get the cap and cap flange that you welded on???
lan fittings are the shit

NotTTT 02-25-09 10:20 AM

AN fittings are the shit. SO much nicer than the old rubber hose and barb bullshit.

I bought all the fittings through Summit Racing. The "radiator" top is standard billet piece that moroso makes, the cap was a generic stant piece I picked up @ autobone (the one in the pic I pulled off my XJ for fitment purposes) the -10AN bungs are offered as Summit pieces, although I'm sure they have someone else turning them for them.....

are you just pulling the metal fittings out of the aluminum, i mean where the hoses used to hook up?? or do you just chop them off and weld on the outside

NotTTT 02-25-09 12:20 PM

You have to pull them out. A little motivation from and oxy/ace torch and a pair of vise grips provides adequate motivation.

You have to pull them out though. The steel will contaminate the weld (more than likely) and will continue to rust away.

The two barbs on the rear iron though, they do NOT like to come out regardless of motivation. I usually give it a good shot, but generally those I carefull cut off and then tap for whatever NPT thread is appropriate. 1/4" on the rear exhaust side, and 3/8" I believe for the heater hose.
