Cloth always smells like a wet tent after it rains in my opinion and like canvas when it's dry. I like the non smelliness of vinyl. We drive sports cars if you want luxury buy a jaguar or something.
|
i have canvas on my vert, looks amazing, and does not smell, you just have to be sure to use the vert top conditioner that bmw and mercedes uses, its that easy. just remember, maintain it, like leather seats..

a couple months, canvas will treat you so well if you make sure to clean it and maintain it, like a rotary lol, or leather...

IMO go with vinyl, I had my top redone around the begining of the year and got my top from robbins. they are pretty good and offer a oem material, their vinyl and a cloth, just some options. I think I paid around 500 or 600 for the top cant remember and it was the robbins vinyl material and it looks great. Also I just did the rear section I didnt need the targa done.
|
The thing about vinyl is it fades and I know this because my brother has a silvia vert, so I might as well go cloth.

Lloyd Again imo rx7's were ment to have vinyl tops, also cloth tops fade too, if you put anything in the sun its gonna fade. Ive only seen one rx7 with a cloth top and to me It didnt look right. I say if you want a cloth top buy a miata. Not trying to offend anyone opinions are like a$$ holes. Anyway good luck on your decision. |
Where is Fl are you?

He is right, basically no matter what top you get you have to maintain it.

Thats a good point but, thats bmw and porsche. The only thing about bmw is I saw green top onetime and it was ugly, dont know if it was original or not. I try to be a purist so if it came with it (vinyl) put it back. That being said and getting off subject also contridicting myself, I wish they made a hardtop for the verts. Like a cf one or something

Call me simple but I like the vinyl.
|
ive been through a couple tops over the years, and I always find the best look and price is a nice quality stock one off craigslist ;)
|
My Cloth top is awesome and I sprayed an excellent water repellant on it to keep it from fading. the spray treatment has lasted over 4 months in Florida outside weather and still beads water like it was put on yesterday. got mine done in WPB florida and it was not cheap ..but its watertight and quieter than the vinly top by far. Also adds a high quality look when up.

I ended up ordering the canvas top from convertible top guys and it just came in today but the rear part doesn't have a rear window opening. Did you guys also have this problem?
|
i like to be able to just wipe the top clean, most of the time it just dries on its own.
I think a cloth top would aggravate me with dust |

Thanks man, they never sent me the contact cement or the prying tool it said it would bring.

You or your installer will have to transfer the window to the new top using the old one as a template. I have the canvas top from the Convertible Top Guys on my 90 Vert and have loved it. Mine is two years old and still looks new. Keeping the water repellant on it and cleaning periodically is key. IMO the canvas top gives the car a little more higher end look. But, to each his own. :)
