Hello all.

In 1998 when I was in high school I bought my first RX-7, a naturally aspirated '87 base model in harbor blue with blue interior. Living in Concord, CA I was lucky enough to meet with Mike Johnson when he opened his shop JRE and learned some tips from him on how to increase output without adding a turbo or spending too much money on a rebuild with porting and/or a fuel system upgrade. I loved that car and over the next 2 years upgraded the suspension to poly bushings, Suspension Techniques Springs, Tokico struts and light weight wheels with Yokohama tires. I then worked with a friend to shave the door handles and third brake light as well as adding a sunroof from a junkyard car which I cut the roof off of.

In 2001 I moved to Southern California to attend Universal Technical Institute and learn about becoming an automotive technician. While attending school there I found and purchased a '93 touring model in vintage red with tan interior from a guy in San Diego. Since I now had the vastly superior third gen I sold the '87 to a friend in Alamo, CA who drove it for a few years before selling it to another one of our friends. The last I heard the '87 was still in Concord, CA in the backyard of that friends mothers house with a blown motor.

Unfortunately shortly after selling the '87 to the first friend the twin turbos of the '93 gave out and I started on the path to upgrading. I opted for an HK turbo system with a T04E turbo and a much larger than stock downpipe and wastegate. I ordered a high output fuel pump, high pressure fuel regulator and some massive 1k cc primary and 2k cc secondary injectors for the project, I also installed a McLeod clutch and was working to have a custom front mount intercooler made. I finished school in southern California and brought the car with me to live in Martinez, CA about a year later but not before meeting my wife.

This is where the story gets sad for all of us 7 lovers. If you have been married and had children you will know they are quite expensive and a 2 seat sports car is not the best vehicle to drive when trying to get around with a bunch of them so before moving to a less expensive part of California I had to sell the '93 and was left without a rotary vehicle let alone a sports car.

It has been many years now since I had to give up my '93 but my children have grown into adults and I am finally on a path where I have a view of the sunshine through the clouds in such a way as I may be able to once again acquire a '93-95 in the next few years. I now live on the Oregon coast and no longer need to worry about the horrible smog regulations of California and will likely modify whatever third gen I end up purchasing (hopefully a LHD manual in Montego Blue or Silver Stone Metallic). While I am waiting to be in the position to buy one I am happy to have found a community of 7 lovers to be a part of.

I hope to make some good connections here and maybe even a few friends.

Thanks for reading my long winded post,

Hi!

I recently found a very clean example of an '88 GLX on Marketplace. After the best buying experience of my life, the seller and I reached an agreement and I pick up the car Saturday!

Thanks to my lurking around here, I knew exactly what to look for in this car, and the seller did me right in laying everything out for me transparently. The engine is about 500mi into a rebuild and is making 117/117/115 & 110/105/107 on the rotary-specific compression tester. New fuel pump, plugs, hoses, vacuum solenoids etc etc. All-around, I think it's the best possible start for breaking into the rotary life.

Going to be picking up the car in Colorado and driving it 7 hours back to Texas. It'll be hot, so I know cooling is going to be critical. Wanted to formally join the site and say thanks for all the years of good intel buried here. I struck gold with this FC, but the real gold is buried on this forum.

Bye for now,

Hello,

I am new(er) here. I’ve been following along for a while and purchased a 1980 LS back in March. This is my third Rx7. I’ve had an 81, an 85(s), and now the 1980. I had the 81 for about a year and a half March of 89 until about September of 90. Then a too good to be true deal came my way and I had the 1985 from September of 1990 until about 1996. The 85 is the one I wish I never got rid of but life has a way of changing the priorities of a young person and a small sports car can become impractical.

I’ve already done a number of projects on the ’80. Brakes, oil change, oil pan gasket, water pump, pump + housing + thermostat gaskets, radiator flush, and I’m about 75% of the way through a steering and front suspension update.

I am in the general area of South East Pennsylvania - about 45 minutes outside of Philly if anyone else is around these parts. I’d also love to learn if there are any expert mechanics in the region helping keep these antiques on the road.

I still have loads to do and I know I will have questions. It is nice to be back in a rotary world.

Hey guys,

New to the forum but definitely not new to the Mazda world. I’m a firefighter and mechanic based in Little Rock, and I’ve actually built up a solid private inventory of RX-7 and Ford parts over the years.

I’ve been a gearhead since college, but my latest project is a ’92 RHD RX-7 arriving in about two weeks. I’ve already got a list of things to dive into, so expect plenty of questions once it lands. I’ve been following the threads here for a while and I’m stoked to finally join the crew.

Happy to chip in and help out where I can.

Hello RX7club members! I´m from Czech Republic and I registered to the forum last year. Up to now I´ve read a few tens of threads. I have learned a lot in here (and on other on-line places too, to be fair). This made me more confident to buy the RX. In some particular tech points I would appreciate fresh views, ideas, so I will ask you later.
Last year I bought a non-runing RX-7 SA 1979, Aurora White, Europe version. My aim is get it back on the road in good, close to stock condition. Engine is in rebuild process now. When car is running it will be registered as an oldtimer, probably next year.
I´m slow in repairs, but I do hope I will persist. Also excuse my English, I´m still learning. Please be kind to me.
Thank you all who serves to other members to get their dreams true or at least make their RX experience less painfull, as it sometimes can be. When I post my first 10 I will start a project thread.
Below is a photo of the car on a place, where I saw it first time...and the story begun.
Currently trying to get it to run on both rotors, in NA form. I'll figure it out. I'm glad to be here. I included a picture of my car below.

Hi! Long time lurker, first time having an account on the forum. I'm young and stupid, so I'll probably be on here mostly looking for advice.

My story with rotaries isn't anything special. My dad has owned several 1st gens and a couple of FC's, and in 201X he bought an '84 GSL-SE. He also decided that he really wanted a 370Z back, so he picked up one of those (how I wish you could still get a decent GSL-SE for only $2.5k) and said I could have the 7 if I worked on it. Now in my 20somethings, i'm in a decent place to put in the time, work, and effort into fixing up the SE. She had a bit of surface rust and trim needs work, so she's been sanded down to almost bare metal from an ugly beige colour. I'm hoping to paint her Black Cherry, the same one used on a couple of Shinka RX-8's.

Other than that, I've worked as a Fitness Trainer (had to stop for a bit for school and helping out a family member), and that's pretty much what has fuelled my rotary addiction. I'm pretty inexperienced when it comes to cars, but I want to learn as much as I can! So don't be afraid to hold my hand and call me stupid for making a dumb error as I catalogue my amateur escapades in restoring the glory of this car.

Previous owners have upgraded to 17-inch wheels, HKS coil-overs, put on a 1999-style front bumper and rear wing, and painted the whole car a stunning orange w/ metallic flakes (tried uploading pictures, but they stall at 90% complete).
