Moving to Germany - Take FD with me??
hello everyone,
Can any one tell me if it is worth it to take my FD to Germany for one year while there on a work assignment? My FD is higly modified and I have a feeling that the TUV will not allow me to register the vehicle. Any thoughts would be greatly apreciated....

You'll have huge problems to register that car if it has single turbo etc. Just what mods are on it?
Should you take it with you, they'll test emissions, noise levels,...
It could become a very expensive thing to get the right paperwork. Also, since the car comes from outside the EU, you'll pay import taxes. This might sound rather stupid when it's your own car, and you only bring it for a year.
However some EU countries don't make you pay import tax on a car you've owned for over 6 months outside this country. So that'll depend on German rules.
Can't you keep it on USA plates?

I really don't know if I could keep the US plates on it while driving around in Germany. I was hoping that someone on this forum would be able to help me with that one.

Hi dieselpower
Your mods rock...
Although I live in Switzerland I might want to signalize that this is a BAD idea...I was exporting Sevens twice from Germany to Switzerland and I'm aware of the TÜV...besides this we in Switzerland have very similar rules for registering a car and your car WOULD (unfortunately) not pass.
I myself have some mild mods on my FD But you definitely need to trick n'cheat someone to make them pass
Best regards
Patrick

Thanks. I have come to the conclusion that taking my FD to Germany will be a bad idea. I know for a fact that my car would not pass emissions testing.
Since I was only going to be in Germany for one year I was hoping that the TUV would be "somewhat" understanding.

well emissions can be passed separately from the TÜV andare mainly a matter of knowing the right people. The TÜV itself might not even know the car should have two turbos and a pre-cat. Where will you be moving to ?

i dont think u must reg. ur Car at the TÜV.
If u have an agreement to drive the car in US so why u cant drive it here in germany. U will deff. not sell the car ,u will drive it. I think it is the same(ok not exactley) as u take a very big suit case with u. I have heard that some Gi´s bring their car to germany also RX-7 and they drive here. U see its possible.

Dude I have taken 4 cars from the US to Europe...All my famly cars are on American plates...and have been for years...Registration is done by mail through the american embassy...In about two years I'm taking my FD back home to Croatia...so you don't have to worry much...only the Germans are kinda tough on emissions...so you never know...

That is exactly my point. I am living in Germany (Stuttgart) and I was concerned with bringing my FD over here. I wound up leaving my FD back in the US.

Maybe you could contact
www.RX7-Dreamcar-Imports.de
?
They are German and importing "strange" (read: not common ) cars - Have worked on a Skyline and I have seen their Eunos Cosmo 20B on German streets...
You always could give the FD to me... ;-)

I went through the website but could not figure out what was being said about the TUV. I only have another 9 months here in Germany before moving back to the US and my FD. Give my FD away???? My wife would kill me.

Hi Jack !!
I live in the near of Munich (app. 200km to Stuttgart). I have a right hand model FD from Japan and the german TÜV needs to conversion European Front Lights, Fog Lamp at the rear. Thats all you need to get german TÜV, BUT !!!!!
Any other changes are big big very big problems. You have no Chance to get a Germany Licence Plate with your Mods. Emission and Exhaust Sound are very very important to Germany.
The only and best way is to take the car to germany and Licence Plate is US. With your US Registration you have no Problem in Germany.
We can take a call if you are in Germany.

I know that in Belgium you can drive the car for 6 months on US plates but after that you are obliged to import it. No idea if it's worth that much to you (shipping costs etc)
Maybe just leave it for a year at home and save some money for the ultimate mod (s) you still had in mind.

when you are in the military and you pcs to anywhere in the world, you have a right to ship your car/motorcycle. you will retain military plates but still have to pass basic tests. I took my FC to germany and loved it.
