K-Type Thermocouple use limits

Can I / should I use K-Type thermocouples for all engine temps? If I use a CAN signal amplifier I will free up a bunch of inputs for half the cost compared to buying an expander box. The FuelTech ECU inputs are much more versatile than the expander inputs.

EGT 1&2 obviously. But what about AIT, water, oil, and maybe fuel temp? I'm seeing +/- 2.2C as a normal deviation for K-Type, that seems fine for all this stuff. Will it be fast enough to be an effective Air Intake Temp sensor?

I would leave the stock sensors for the dash in place.

What part of this is a bad idea?

water and oil temps don't change very fast, so they don't really need a sensor like that, although it should work fine

seems like it is a better AIT though, we want response there

As long as they will work correctly. This is about freeing up inputs for as little money as possible.

it’s your sandwich, make it any way you want. :suspect:

Yes you can, provided the software of whatever ECU youre using gives you the option. Earlier MAXX builds didnt let you free up things at times, same with Haltech if I recall. Your mileage may vary.

FuelTech FT550, no issues re-assigning ECU inputs. The expander boxes are limited by signal type, that's why freeing up the ECU inputs are so valuable to me

I like you approach. It's how I've set-up my Motec (as much as possible): CAN > expanders.

That said, if you use a CAN device/box which is not from your ECU/PDM/Display system, make sure you're comfortable with the required CAN messaging to integrate it into the network.

I'm sticking with the FuelTech options. I dislike wiring and I'm just learning how all this stuff integrates, keeping it simple is a priority. If something needs to be replaced later on, I'll know where to go instead of having to sort through spreadsheets or identify part numbers with a scrub brush and a loop lmao
