Tec3 keep or switch to Microtech or Haltech?

So my friend owed me some money and as payment gave me a new Tec3 standalone with wiring harness, and all accessories as payment. I was curious if this is considered a good stand alone for tuning the 20b 3 rotor or should I sell it and buy a Haltech or Microtech? I figured you guys on Rx7club would have some good insight...any help is appreciated. Thanks

Which TEC3 unit is it? If its the older purple box TEC3, then it has to be the "6/12" variant to work on the 20B.

A friend of mine runs his turbocharged peripheral port 20B with TEC3 and swears by it.

The TEC is a GREAT ECU.

As mentioned, determine what box it is first. But if its the later model I would keep it for sure.

Did he give you the trigger wheel and coils with it also? You'll need those to run the engine on that ECU, that would be the only "drawback". I quote drawback because it isn't really - the trigger wheel setup is super accurate, and the coils are the strongest thigns aroudn with no CDI that you'll find.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah, it is the purple box TEC3. It came with the unterminated harness, a DFU coil pack(p/n#33600) with 3 coils (all dual post) on it. He also gave me a 7.25" trigger wheel, a "distributor style" magnetic pick-up, mat sensor, map sensor, coolant sensor, 1/2" mag sensor, ego sensor, and an eight pack of fuel injector connectors...
Is there anyway to determine if its the 6/12 variant?
Are these Tec3's worth anything? I cant seem to find any for sale...and if this isnt the correct one I am wondering if selling it would even be worth it....
Does the Tec3 have any benefits for the rotary that would make it a better choice over say the Haltech or Microtech?

I like the TEC because the ECU, trigger and coils are all made to work together. With other ECUs for example Haltech, the ECU is made in Australia on a Japanese crank sensor with american MSD coils. When things are working right, they are great but when things don't work as they should, things are not so great.

There are a lot of fast cars with Haltechs as well as Microtechs so it will come down to the person setting up the harness and tuning the car.

As for the TEC3, I have the same ECU and love it. I do wish it had more inputs as the newer TEC GT. If you decide to sell and get something else, PM me.
