electromotive tuning...who can?
 
sr motorsports is almost through fabricating the somewhat "plug-in" harnesses for the TEC III for the FD. i am buying one as soon as they are done, and am wondering WHO can tune them. they 'say' that they will come 'slightly' tuned, but what do i do about that? hell, i have a lap-top, but have not, and do not feel comfy tuning the car, yet, with that ever-lingering chance to pop the motor while tuning. yeah, i hear the chances are slim, but i am concerned about the $9K bill that i just footed from pettit. i am chosing the tec unit because it comes with a seperate coil set up and 'seems' more advanced than the haltec and definately the Power FC. also, do these kind of engine management systems, like the haltec and the tec III 'understand' load like AC and say...power steering? i am being overly concerned for a good reason. i do not want to blow ANOTHER engine....

know what i mean?

sr motorsports is the only rx7 tec III dealer that i know of.....if YOU KNOW of any others, i would love to know of them.......thanks for the reply......

my concern was that sr sold the units with a harness that adapted to the rx7 'fairly' well. however, it looks as if i am going to buy a power fc now. it will cost em upwards of $4k to have it totall installed and integrated into the car. and of course tuning.......

sr will sell the PKG tec III w/the harness for 3K....then i would attempt the installation.....then tuning it is another ordeal. RP, in garland, is the closest reputable shop that i know of, and i dunno if they would tune the damn thing at all......

There's really no such thing as a harness for most stand-alone ECU's that I've ever seen, you have to wire them custom anyhow. Any shop that specializes in custom aftermarket computers should be able to install your computer...all you're hooking up to is the fuel pump, and it comes with your own coolant temp, MAP, and air temp sensor, plus the TEC III has it's own built-in boost controller.

What they meant by the computer being "slightly" tuned is just SR giving you a base map. From there, and what's nice about the TEC's, is that they will self-learn up to the accuracy of the stock oxygen sensor (narrow-band). So basically, install it, fire it up, and go driving around for awile to let it learn. Then after a few hours of driving it so it learns a variety of load characteristics, you can start tuning with an A/F and EGT guages.

You do get what you pay for and if you're that worried about the complexity of the installation/tuning/etc, then just do a Haltech or a Wolf 3D 4.0 since there's so many people that have tuned maps, just get one of theirs.

The Power FC will get you by but it's definitely not used by people who do any serious road activities because it's simply not as good of a unit as the other stand-alones.

so what you are telling me is that SR is not *fabricating* a harness that will replace the one that is in the car right now, or what they are doing is nothing special. they are doing a harness for the tec III like some shops do for the haltech...they say that their harness will plug into the injectors and all of that other good stuff.

also, chris at RP has been trying to convince me NOT to get a haltech, due to their poor daily drivablity charachteristics. this concerns me also. because i fi went to the tec III, i would hope that it is a good product for every day usage. And not something that is only useful for a "single turbo race-car"

any more insight would be helpful....

Well, I'm not sure exactly what they are doing because I'm not there, however... I'm assuming you are removing the stock ECU and stock wiring harness in its entirety? Yes? Therefore with that assumption, a best guess is that they are creating a wiring harness that will plug directly up to the TEC 3 ( the TEC 1's at least you have to plug each wire directly into the computer with it's own terminal, real sucky) whereas the 3 has a multi-wire output that you simply solder up your connections (such as the MAP, coolant temp, etc).

Ok, so what I'm saying is...they are most likely making a harness that will connect to only the sensors that the TEC 3 needs to run the car and that all you have to do is mount the computer, install the sensors, connect the quick connects of the wiring harness to the sensors, and then connect those to the TEC 3 wiring harness.

As far as driveability with Haltechs...I don't agree with that at all. Any EMS properly tuned will function on the street. Keep in mind that properly tuned means a lot of thing in relation to time involved properly tuning it, the cars end-use (street, track, different kinds of racing), and the person tuning it (their knowledge/expertise)...

I'll avoid the argument here that X EMS is better than another because I'm simply not educated enough to answer that properly, however...I personally go by the saying that you get what you pay for, both in the EMS AND... the tuning that goes into it. You can have a MOTEC that runs like cr@p...and then you can have a Microtech that runs great... and they're both on completely different ends of the spectrum in regards to cost. For me, I have a TEC 1 running my 20B which I purchased before they started making the TEC 3's which will now run them as well. Oh well.

Electromotive tec 2 tuning.
 
I realize I am posting to very old threads but I know there are some people running the tec 2 still like me and Nitrometano. I have helped him get his car running much better through emailing our bins. back and forth with feedback to gauge results and to help get a fuel map somewhat close so he could at least drive his car. I live in southern california and Nitro metano lives in south america. Its hard to get a exact tune not being there and seeing someones moniter engine screen while starting and running but it is possible. No 2 rotarys like the same fuel map. Things like turbo size injector size porting type of gas climate and altitude all are key factors when tuning a fuel map or ignition curve. Its a chalenge but I am game. John.
