Transmission talk Tex racing t101

I have decided that in order to keep my car on the track i must bite the bullet and get a tex racing t101 and mate it to this badass rotary motor i have. Its funny because my motor makes over 400hp and the least unreliable thing in this car is this damn transmission. I have spoken to a few road race guys locally and they have all sudgested i go twith this tranny. I sent a message to Jeremy lowe who runs Formula D and he also said he is running this transmission. Well I just sold a set a wheels to fund this badass trans project. In the next few weeks i will post up all the parts needed with pricing on what it takes to do this.

My plan right now is to get a Tex racing t101/t101a in by next month. wish me luck.

These are the stock R152 gear ratios.

1st 3.483:1
2nd 2.015:1
3rd 1.391:1
4th 1.000:1
5th 0.719:1
rev 3.288:1

Im not sure on what 1st/2nd gear ratios i want. 3rd/4th will stay as close as possible to stock.

Pricing of a Tex racing T101 with a long shifter runs about $2000-$4000 depending where you find them. I found a guy that can build me one to my spec for $2500

RussTII 07-29-12 02:48 AM

interested in how this turns out.

personally i wouldnt want 3rd/4th to be near stock. i always thought the distance from the top of 2nd to the powerband of 3rd gear was too far away. Id like to see a shorter 3rd gear and a near stockish 4th gear. but my setup is not really designed for response (TO4R/Halfbridge/ FMIC instead of V mount)

What are you going to do about the bellhousing? Is this a dog-type engagement trans? Are you going to do any external oil cooling/pumps?

I was also looking into this and the more I read the more I realized i didnt know. Looking forward to see how this turns out

1. Stock 3rd gear is a little long, but the reason for this i think is the lack of being able to shift it fast enough to stay in the power band. I have an act light flywheel and shifting into 3rd and keeping the revs up has been hit or mis for me. I might make it a little shorter and 4th will stay 1:1.

2. Right now the bell housing im gonna use will be a turboll and starter w/ a home made adapter to trans. This will allow me to keep my flywheel, clutch, pressure plate.

3. This trans is a dog type engagement with a LONG H pattern 4 gear trans.

4. I think depening on which trans you get t101a.....you can add an oil cooler. I dont road race so it wont be need it. Would be nice!!

I'm running a stock 3rd gear ratio, but a little taller than stock 1st and 2nd. Seems to work pretty good.

jgrewe 08-02-12 04:43 PM

If you are going with a T10 style dogring, why don't you just spec the gears you want? There are a million combo's. Spread 1st to 4th between 2:1 and 1:1 and you'll be set.

Oh yea, "Long" is the brand, not the size for people confused about the shifter choice.

watkins 08-02-12 11:31 PM

I recently picked up a g force 101a and it was the best thing ive ever done to my fd. you are going to love it!

ballinnmiami240sx 08-03-12 01:14 PM

Any pictures would be appreciated. I just ordered a t2 bell housing and starter. Today i goin to order the trans.

I have been talking to the builder and right now we are trying to decide ratio's

2.86/1.86/1.33/1.00

or

2.40/1.75/1.33/1.00

These are the two he sudgested with my goals.

What about spline and tail shaft? I run an act clutch and pp right now.

watkins 08-03-12 05:11 PM

yeah il try and get some photos and il post up more details when I can

ordered a refurbished box through bubba at g force because I spent a month trying to find something that didn't have cirlcle track gearing and just got over missing events

they made an adapter for the fc bellhousing which looking back on it we probably could have made an fd bellhousing work then i could have retained my stock clutch assembly. insdead got a new one. clutch is easy the only thing special was that it have to have i believe 26 spline but any clutch manufacturer can do that and they aren't any more expensive normally

we have to get a new slave and started (my were not in the best condition and the fc vs fd means there was a difference of push/pull type clutch)

we made a super basic bracket to support the tranny utilizing the power brace that the car already had.

tranny came with a driveshaft yoke and we had a custom driveshaft made by a local shop. i think that was like $200 and took a day.

we did have to cut the tranny tunnel on the passenger side to allow for the shifter linkage (I have a right hand drive fd)

il think of more of what went into it and try and get prices and gears asap

ballinnmiami240sx 08-07-12 01:08 PM

Put a down payment on my trans.

its gonna be a t101 with a 26 spline shaft and a 32 spline drive shaft connection. Will come with a "long" shifter.

I found a guy with a t2/starter and that is being shipped to me.

Things I need to know:

Is the FD and t2 bellhousing the same length? Reason I ask is because he needs to make the bracket for the long shifter to put the shifter in the right place after I give him some measurements.

Also my plan is to try to use the FD bell housing first.

What throwout bearing did you guys use?

Molotovman 09-10-12 11:29 AM

Have any of you guys used a r-box from a B2600? I don't know if there's a difference in the input shaft from the FC r-box to the truck one. I wonder if it's as easy as pulling one out of a rwd B2600i and swapping the truck bell housing for the FC one.
On the truck 1st -3rd are shorter, 4th is the same and 5th is shorter too. I'll grab the ratios soon.

Molotovman 09-10-12 11:32 AM

The gear rations are shorter from the truck at:
3.730:1 / 2.158:1 / 1.396:1 / 1:1 / .816:1

S4 TII is:
3.483:1 / 2.015:1 / 1.391:1 / 1:1 /.762:1

That trans looks like its going to be sweet man. How much power is it supposed to handle?

ballinnmiami240sx 09-10-12 04:13 PM

it can handle 800hp +. just depends how well i can shift it. :/

I wasnt looking for a patch for my FD, hense wy i got this trans. Im sure i could have put a t56, getrag, r154....lalalalala. They would all run me just about the same or more to install. Straight gears was what i wanted. no more shitty shifting fd trans, missing gears, and most important no more down time from an fd transmission. I found Joel on racingjunk.com and he has a great reputable business. I think i might be his second drift customer.

Molotovman 09-11-12 06:45 PM

Lol. I thought you were putting this in an FC.
Good luck!

The problem i see with these ratios is that while yes the first 3 gears are shorter compared to the rx7 trans but you are increasing the spacing between each gear. This means that when you shift you will end up at a lower rpm the the stock ratios . . . Ideally you would want to go taller ratios 1-3, keep 4th at 1:1 and get a shorter 5th this would give you a close ratio box and make it so that after you shift you are in the meat of your power band. You can then make any speed corrections with a higher ratio ring and pinion.

my $.02

sideways-FC 09-19-12 10:49 PM

this tranny looks interesting! do you have to modify the body of the car at all to mount this thing?

sil8ty 09-21-12 11:02 AM

what did you end up paying for that setup if you don't mind me asking.
