Depends on who you are drifting with. Find the rules and follow them.

Check with your local event coordinators first?
Some places don't require a cage initially, only for tandem runs or competition runs, as it is out here in Utah. Other places require it, no questions asked. Most sanctions require a 6-point cage with door bars, and a fixed-back seat with good harnesses [4-point minimum]. |
download the Formula drift 2010 rulebook, and it'll show you exactly what can be done to your cage... any drifting series (pro-am anyways) follows those guidelines. find it on google, download it, print out the roll cage portion, and go shop around to see who seems legit, and are willing to follow it.

1.5 DOM and .095 wall thickness for your piping

Your local organization is ClubFR. Go on their website and read all about what you need. www.ClubFR.com
For ClubFR rules, you don't need a roll cage at all, unless you have a convertible. If you want to tandem you need a cage and door bars but you will need some practice before trying tandem stuff anyway. You're lucky! ClubFR is a really great group of people. I'd say it's some of the best grassroots level drifting in the US. |
