Lets Talk Differentials

Hey guys trying to get as much info as possible about differentials before I return home from deployment in a couple months.

A little background first I suppose, I have a 88 FC with a 5.0 swap and a T-5 trans. Currently im running a stock T2 rear end and I could tell before I left that it wasnt engaging like it used to. Im not sure if its a S4 or S5 and currently have no way to check since im half way around the world.

What would be the best route to go with the rear end? Should I look into welding the T2 diff, should I just shim it? I know some are going to say swap out the internals for some baller 1.5 or 2 way but I cant really afford that.

So really any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have the S4 TII LSD just rebuild it with new clutch discs.

I agree, and use some beer can shims to get it really tight. welded to me is awe-full for a street driven car. others will disagree and enjoy the car chirping at slow speeds in parking lots.

ive heard of the shimming and looked at a couple quick threads on here about it. I cant remember where i saw it, but i heard something about being able to add extra material, such as beer or coke cans, and it would become fully locked?

It depends on how many stacks of shims you put in. All it does is creates more friction with the clutch disks

I welded my t2 diff. works great

lamar- 05-20-14 05:31 PM

Was it a s4 or s5 t2 diff that you welded?

Cuzzynz 05-21-14 07:46 AM

im most likely going to weld my diff unless i can get my hands on a turbo2 set up that isnt worn out.

I snagged a 2-way TII Carbonetic Diff from THMotorsports last year for like $550 shipped. Keep an eye out for his sales on here.

I have a brand new S5 TII diff assembly that I could let go if you're interested.

Your names Ryan right? If so I think I sent you a message on Facebook one day when you said you were rewelding it, Do you by chance have any photos of what you welded up?

Zenki FC3S 05-26-14 12:59 AM

Pretty, much pulled out the differential and took pinion off, then pull the clutch housing apart. Since Forrest welded, some of it I wasnt able to get to the spider gears inside. No pics but I have a pic in the welded diff thread.

You can take one side of the clutch packs out, and weld the side gear to the housing. The side gear is splined to the axles.
