how to hold a drift?
 

Well I have a 83 GSL rx7 with a gsl-se engine swap with mikuni carb and exhaust. So its got enough power I'm pretty sure. I'm just wondering how its done properly. All I know how to do is basically slide and re-align myself. Here is an example. Say im going to turn right on a street up ahead and wanted to "drift" it. I would put it in 2nd gear, hold the clutch in and in the middle of the turn rev up a little and pop the clutch out to make it slide. How are you supposed to hold a drift?

Try to find "Drift Bible by Keiichi Tsuchiya he explains things very well. Just don't mow down a family of 4 on a residential street.

And the answer is throttle control and small steering adjustments! That doesn't neccessarily mean one throttle position either.

Do you self a huge favor go out somewhere and slide around in smooth uninterrupted circles. Then go the opposite way then try to manipulate teh car's angle while doing so then diminish the raduis of the circle and back out and increase and decrease it at will. Now do figue eights and practice all the same things. in out in out slower faster bigger smaller radius' not try it at like 20mph then 30mph and then stop and make sure you know that about 40-50mph is when it gets really dangerous and harder to react in timne and ask yourself if your in a safe environment to be doing it. Meaning there's plenty of room. If there is then steadily increase speed and start trying trnasitioning form one direction to the next while avoiding an obstacle like a cone or something that won't kill you and your car. Practice sliding around things through two things whatever you can think of to make it harder but not more dangerous. Then go to D1 and win one for the americans!

If your Japanese drifting knoledge is built into your brain( if not keep trying :scratch: )

+1 drifting starts at being able to do a controlled donut, not just floor it and turn the wheel donuts. once you can have the car spinning around a point with the front wheels pointed in the direction the car is moving you're ready for the d1gp. the last parts a lie but seriously it all starts with learning throttle control and steering

yeah you should probably start by doing donuts, that'll teach you throttle control!

On the Drift Bible, Tsuchiya suggests setting up a traffic cone and practicing 180 degree turns. It helps you learn your e-brake control. Next, try 90 degree turns, adjusting how much you pull the e-brake and your speed to come out at the right angle

To keep a long drift (like through a sweeper style turn):
-Feint to initiate (Turn the wheel the opposite direction of the turn then snap it back to the way you want to go)
-Counter steer (steer in the opposite direction of the turn, it sounds weird but it makes sense when you do it because if you dont you'll spin out)


That should do it, just practice a lot. Oh yeah, keep on the throttle. :icon_tup:

sweeper = clutch kick, stay on gas, not to much counter, cause it will slow you down too much.

If you counter too much you will straighten...

umm no... If you counter to much you will hit full lock and spin out.

:wallbash: Think about it, initiate into a turn and immediatley counter too much, youll straighten back out. That's common knowledge.

if you dont give it enough gas you straighten out because the rear wheels grip, making them follow the front tires, which are pointed in the direction your going.

too much counter you'd just whip around and either spin or go straight if you turned the wheel back in time.

but its hard to do too much counter since the front wheels pretty much turn themselves, you just maintain it

You can read on here all day long about how to drift but in all reality you just need some seat time. There are many ways to control your drift through a long turn, you just have to pick one and use it or learn how to use them all. A good rule to go by while your learning though, if your halfway through the corner and your drift fails, stop the drift and proceed to the next corner. I see too many new guys "off course" because they try to save face by re-initiating their drift halfway through the apex. Hell, I did it myself my first day out and I got yelled at by my teacher as I was doing it. I still crashed but I learned my leason. Now I can re-initiate my drift just fine because I've learned how. That's all the word advise I can give, the rest just comes by feeling your car. And one more thing, take your time!!! You have to fight with the car not against it, try to let your hands move fluently. Good Luck
