To heat or not to heat, opinions please.

So I'm going to be picking up a TII shell sometime next week and start my next build with it as my base. Should i pull the heater core and all associated items in the cab or should I leave it in there? I'd like to keep it just to help keep the engine cool on hot days and also I will, very rarely, drive it on the street and was thinking it'd be nice to defrost the windshield once in awhile

The only benefit I see to taking it out is weight savings and cleanliness. That and removing one more potential electrical problem.:icon_tup:

I like having my heater because I still drive my car on the street. Don't wana be wiping the window if it gets foggy. lol. I say keep it just in case.

nismo_bill 03-27-11 11:44 AM

No one in Michigan would ever do this.. Lol must be nice.

that's kinda what I was thinking too. But I could Anti-Fog it and it MIGHT be fine. It won't get driven on the street unless it's to a close event or meet though, and those are far and few between.

It's cold, wet and snowy in Oregon too, it's not like I live in So-Cal or something lol. It's just this car will RARELY see street driving and I am curious if other drivers have done this and regreted it or if it didn't even bother them. I want a dash bar with my cage as well and the heater core is directly in the way of that unless i cut it up and make it work, which I've seen a few times.

My thinking on heat, it's one of those 'better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it' type things.
It may not see much street action but the track can be just as cold while waiting in queue.

i live in georgia and would not do this

fuck the cold.

you lose the the ability to defrost your windshield too

anti-fog works great but I agree with your second line

I'm planning on doing it to my FC, but mine will probably see less time on the street than my bike, so I can go without heat.

driftfcbuckey 03-28-11 05:17 AM

before i had everything in there and i didnt fully understand how awesome it really was having the ability to defrost your window on rain drift days.... it's impossible on cold/wet days to get any visibility without it. pitch it, and looking out the side windows only does get old.

leave it. it's only like 15lbs.

Polak Graphics 03-28-11 09:45 AM

Leave it but take the time to flush it out. Throwing the heat on in the fd actually helps lower temps during a hot day.

bewst12psi 04-28-11 08:05 PM

when i did my v-mount, I forgot to put a bung into the lower Rad pipe. and ontop of it, I completely didnt think about it till the motor was in and I was hooking everything back up.... plus the heater core leaked when I bought the car... so no heat for me for right now, but I do have the blower motor and heater box still. I'll probably do something about it some day.. The blower alone seems to be ok right now.

Honestly, This is really the only benefit you will get out of it. If your car can't move 15 extra pounds, then your doing something wrong.

I think when a lot of people build a car, and they getting ready to strip stuff off of it, more people should really ask themselves how far they are willing to go. Because if your gonna strip stuff like A/C, heater, radio, and that kinda crap, your better off leaving it because honestly 100 pounds doesn't make a difference. But if you plan on gutting your door's, wire harness, and really getting into it, then I think that's were you will see a big difference in weight.

I have a TII and I downgraded to most of the base features for simplicity and less headaches. Everything related to AC, cruise control, emissions, ABS brakes, power seat belts... gone. BUT I did keep my heat ;)

NoPistons! 04-29-11 03:09 AM

Run heat. Pull all the ac shit though. Huge weight savings.

^real talk.
I have a box with all my AC shit. I weighed it for a shipping quote, it was like 48lbs or something. Heater components probably weigh less than half that.

NoPistons! 04-29-11 11:26 PM

It's crazy how light you can get these cars. I'm ready to hack shit off with a sawzall and bust out the holesaw! Sun roof is getting sheeted and shaved, 10 pounds of wiring are going to get the fuck out of here and when funds allow, i'm going to smash my hatch glass out playing five finger death punch as loud as i can to give the neighbors (they're faggots and i hate them all) something to talk about and put some lexan in.

NoPistons! 04-30-11 07:08 PM

So, i pulled my dash out a while ago and NOW, i'm getting nothing but bullshit from the logicon. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I spent ALOT of time heat shrinking, soldering, extending the entire loom for the thing only to have it cop out and decide it will be a tease, blow and then stop as soon as i start the engine..... Whatever.

Zerkster 04-30-11 08:01 PM

its only 15 lbs or so. Just take a shit and cut your hair. boom

rx7freak13v 05-14-11 08:18 PM

If u ditch the heater core, ac blower fan, ac core, vent piping and logicon then u save roughly 80lbs (I weighed it in a crate on a cheap bathroom scale). I ditched it all. Buy a windshield wonder from walmart for $9.99 and ur foggy windshield is taken care of. I pulled my dash and gutted everything behind it that wasn't important. In the morning I use my windshield wonder to defog and good to go. I say ditch it, and never look back. The rest of my car is gutted though. 2 seats, dash, shifter surround and stereo bezel (no center consol, no stereo tho I plan to reinstall one) this car is my daily :)

leftcoastdrifter 05-14-11 11:42 PM

I pulled everything but I have a plan now, found something interesting in a Ford Courier :)
