FRFC3S's FC Build - Partout Performance

1 Attachment(s)
Hey all,

This 1987 Sunrise Red Turbo II is my fifth FC. It will likely be a slow build due to my personal life, but I plan to take it to NHMS in Loudin, NH to compete in the Clubloose North grassroots drift days.

I've also set myself a budget, but we'll see how that goes. It needs some work but it runs and it came with Godspeed coilovers and a Racing Beat catback exhaust.

Initial plans are a to fix what is broken, a tune up, reliability mods, DTSS eliminators, and to part out some of the other junk it came with to loosen up the budget.

Thanks in advance for all of your input/help and please check out the links in my signature when you get a chance, too.

"It needs some work..." may have been an understatement.

Stay motivated, you shouldn't have a problem. Have you checked the vitals.? Compression, oil lines, leaks?

It starts right up and pulls good, but has a coolant leak at the thermostat housing which is preventing me from figuring out what else is wrong with it as coolant gushes everywhere. OEM gasket already ordered! I need to get an OEM thermostat, too...

Then I'll be doing the tune up, coolant and diff fluid flushes, etc.

While I was waiting for the gasket to arrive I bought some 16x7.5 +30mm Mustang GT rims. Shouldn't change the weight too much and they are a bit wider and stick out a bit further for a better center of gravity and wider tire options. Plus, I hate BBS, spokey-type wheels.

I also swapped the rear wiper, oil cap, and battery terminals from my parts car.

Loving the rims.

Finished mounting the rims, the fronts are rubbing due to how low the car is so I think I'm going to give it some negative camber and raise it up a little.

Additionally, after removing the thermostat housing and scraping off all the RTV it is pretty obvious what was causing the coolant leak. I just need to drill out the broken bolt/stud and I'll run new hardware through it.

Finally, I was goofing around trying to set up the boost gauge and blowoff valve but I ran out of vacuum nipples/plugs.

There will also be video updates for those who are interested. A link to the YouTube channel is in my signature.

Today I was able to set up the boost gauge. Unfortunately, the blowoff valve needs a custom mount so I was unable to set it up.

I was also able to plug the unused egt sensor bung on the pre-cat.

The exterior was also given some attention, as I removed the leftover trim on the door in anticipation of reattaching the trim with double-stick tape.

The car was raised about 1/4" to 1/2" and the front fenders were slightly rolled because even the stock rims were rubbing at this ride height.

Finally, the interior was given some attention. I got a stock shift knob.

Not a very entertaining update, but like I said it is going to be a slow building. However, all that is really left is to fix this giant crack in the windshield. Action shots aren't too far away!

Sold some parts today and the machine shop finished my blowoff valve adapter.

Busy weekend. I wasn't able to get much done other than swapping out the rusted sunroof.

I'm not sure if anybody is reading this, but I'll continue to update this for my own records.

Still waiting on an M6x1.0 Heli-Coil repair kit for the thermostat housing....

In the meantime, I gave the taillight housings and the license plate bracket a quick respray of black gloss because they were looking pretty harsh.

I have a target date of getting the car all legal within two weeks, that gives me a month to shake it down and do general maintenance on the car before the July 25th Club Loose North event.

Spoiler alert, the two weeks target date didn't work out so hot. New target date is two weeks from tomorrow.

Still waiting on the title to come in the mail.

The tinkering continues in the meantime. Nothing good, so I didn't bother updating you guys. Little stuff like trying to get my rear wiper to work. Got better fitting lugnuts. Etc.

Still waiting on the title.

In the meantime, I replaced the rear bumper.

Yes, I understand that there have not been any action shots. I've been really busy with work, etc. Originally I told you all this would be a slow build, but I didn't intend for it to be a sloooowwwww build. The good news is that I am still way within budget.

So life got in the way a little and I didn't have the time to update, but I did do plenty of tinkering. However, this car has yet to make it onto the track. Currently, I am doing some maintenance work such as replacing hoses and vacuum caps, but the weather has not been cooperating.

SpikeDerailed 04-09-16 02:39 PM

are you planning to street this thing or track only?

FRFC3S 04-11-16 01:52 PM

Dug through the parts from my old cars and found a spare coolant level sensor. The dashboard stopped buzzing the second that I plugged in the spare sensor. Thank God.

The plan for next weekend is to put it on jackstands and raise up the coilovers.

For now: Street, but only weekends (not my daily).

Once I have a tow rig: Track only.

looks good, are you gonna get camber plates and adjustable links?

labuffness 04-18-16 08:19 AM

I plan on bringing mine up to Englishtown once I'm done too. Hope to see you there.

I think I need some seat time, and then some DTSS eliminators, before I even start thinking about that stuff. But I suppose nothing is outside of the realm of possibility. Any recommendations?

New windshield in.

Driver's-side floorpan replacement is under way.

Car is ready once I can bolt a driver's seat to the floor.

Freeskier7791 07-08-16 09:38 AM

Techno toy or Ground Control camber plates are good, Ronin Speedworks makes affordable rear camber links that are fixed but have different lengths you can choose depending on how low you wanna go

Always nice to see a local build! Keep up the great work! Also worth mentioning we are out of Stoughton, MA and regularly stock Maintenance items, we also carry over 250+ named brands and OEM mazda parts and specialize in rotaries :D

FRFC3S 07-22-16 01:16 PM

Thanks for the tips, guys.
