FD angle mod / issues
Hello guys,
I am currently thinking about doing the knuckle mod for my FD. From what I've seen when I've pulled out the tie rod end ... I can't chop so much because of the caliper and it's bolts hitting the lower arm. For the FD drifters here, have you just setup your angle to this point or made some other modifications ? Thanks ;) (Any other tip for the FD steering angle will be accepted too  ) |
Yes you are correct. Its usally the wheel that rubs the lower control arm though. If you dont want to rub, I would only cut like 1/2 inch out of them, maybe a hair more.

powered by max mods knuckles for the fd.. i plan on going with those .. or JTP can make knuckles for you as well..
heres a link for the knuckles http://www.gtfactory.jp/cms/e107_plu...ic.php?3394.40 http://www.gtfactory.jp/cms/e107_fil...4_p1040703.jpg http://www.gtfactory.jp/cms/e107_fil...4_p1040705.jpg http://www.gtfactory.jp/cms/e107_fil...4_p1040709.jpg |
Thanks !
I'm gonna do it myself, but was wondering about the bolts and the caliper, if it's the wheel, that means that I run a shy offset or need more spacers ^^ So, about the lower bolt of the front calipers, you don't have any problem on yours ? (btw it's a track only car) |
No sir. Your caliper will be fine.
And yes you have it correct. You need to get them low offset wheels to not hit anything, or dont cut a bunch off your knuckle. |
Thanks ! I cut them next week :)

Hi !
Now the mods are done, but see what's the result : http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4529262_n.jpg + 3mm spacers Not an extreme angle but ... https://a.imageshack.us/img12/9041/canon210.jpg (The wheel come back a bit, so imagine a little more) But ... yes, my caliper isn't that fine :( https://a.imageshack.us/img204/2805/canon190.jpg https://a.imageshack.us/img405/75/canon191.jpg This winter I will try to copy the Ikeya Formula lower control arm, with it you can add more camber between the hub and the arm, so the caliper will have much more room. Or I can just buy a big brake kit ... https://a.imageshack.us/img801/6997/capturehr.png |
Shit yeah. We're waiting on something much like that for the fc. It's a needed thing. Not the angle mod but an adjustable lca.

How much did you take out/move it?
PS, you need more front camber. |
Bruce, in the second pic, it looks like the car is off the ground. If it is, that may be why the wheel is all positive camber'd.
The first pic, the car looks to be on the ground and is straight up at lock. |

I put Satoru works Knuckles in my fd drift car it get 43 degrees turn on it. About $1100

stock is around 35 degrees, my first cut to the knuckle got me to around 46.5 degrees. I added the tie rod inners with the spacer built in from seeltuned and got it to around 48.5 before the caliper was touching the control arm. You need a BBK to get any more angle out of it.

hmmm... lots of tinkering around.. im def either going with JTP or powered by max for my knuckles..

Attachment 722248 this is 1/2" removed from steering knuckle and tien (r32/240) inner and outer tierods with rack spacer. shaved 1/8" off lower bolt head of brake and 1/8th or so from lower control arm. running 17x9 with +2 offset (+22 with 20mm spacer) 245/40 tire. no rub. I really like this setup. i might try for another set of knuckle with more cut out but i think its pretty much maxed untill i build custom lower control arms. |
^^ not bad. I like the set-up.

However FD's rack are in the front so this isn't a problem. PBM welds are stout and they also drop the tie rod pickups down. This puts less angle on the tie rod and a lot less stress on them. And 2 different mounting points for the tie rod for 2 different angle settings so this Helps if your changing wheels a lot. (The biggest problem with knuckles is binding and snapping tie rods) in my experience atleast Im running 18x9.5 up front so this will give me options so i can adjust with spacers and all that good stuff. PBM is a drifting only company so they know their shit. At the same time JTP also knows whats up. I've never driven on his knuckles but I have a good friend thats had a shit load of FC's with his knuckles and never had a problem. Plus JTP is a midwest guy and I always like helping out another driver from the MW. |
Hmm,
My camber is a bit better now, but to be honest it's not insane as I wanted to :/ In fact I've maxxxed it out to get the more negative camber for the inner wheel in full lock. The static camber is not that good but I don't care for the moment. fourkruzn, I think mine is somewhere near your angle as we are both hitting the caliper in the lower arm. But it looks weak when I'm in front of my car. Tommorow I'll bring the car for another test track day, we will see if this "laser alignment" (aheeemm, yeah, no, with my eyes actually) with more toe out in front, more caster and camber makes me more confortable with the car. (+ getting 0.9bar @4500 instead of 0.5 @5500 ^^) Oh and what is the BBK thing ? Very interesting answers anyway ! |
he is reffering to a Big Brake Kit...bbk that will put the brake caliper farther to the rear and will not hit control arm as quick. set your car up so you can inspect the brake to control arm clearance with the car lowered. it will not hit as soon. i think over the winter i will build even shorter spindles and look at builing some custom tubular control arms. this should then set up the next limiting facter as were not all that far away from hitting the frame with the tires allready.... then we might have to notch the frame..... damn tho it would be cool to get s13 angle with a FD tho... might just be worth the work.

Hum ...
... After 5 warm up / testing laps and 1 drift lap, I've lost an apex seal. I'm kinda bored as the engine lasted ~7 hours since it's in the car. So the modifications are frozen for now. I don't know what happened and this situation makes me feeling nostalgic about my old bimmer. Always reliable, only one oil service per year. Damn. (about the angle, it was pretty good actually, thanks for the reduced ackerman. Full lock at the second corner... Very frustrated !) |
i have dang drifters knuckles on my FD but its not ready to hit the track yet.... its crazy how little angle FD's get compared to s chassis! even my stock miata had more angle lol
|
You've had only 7 hours run time on that engine?
Fresh rebuild? Damn, that sucks.... I wish you a speedy recovery. |
Thanks !
It was a second hand engine, but according to an UK specialist it was a good engine. To be honest, I don't know if I've made a good choice with trusting him ... But we will see the damages. It's the rear rotor, and I can't understand what happened so far :/ I think it can be a good idea to start a thread about my car, as we don't see many FDs in this section ! |
