Anybody know how zip ties became associated with the drifting scene?

I know that zip ties are used to hold up bumpers and/or other aero parts that people damage while sliding, but i wanna know where the grassroots of zip ties came from. If you think about it, its heavily involved in our drifting culture with colored zip stitches and everything. If you look at events like All Star Bash, the majority of the cars there are held together this way. Any interesting info or trivia would be awesome. Thanks guys!

It started in the early 1980's when John Earl Tie created the zip ties. He was an avid road racer and noticed that racers tape(duct tape) didn't do the job. Drifters took notice and adopted it.

I have no clue, i made all that up.

.. wat. Seriously. They are just zipties.
They hold stuff together.

Basically zip ties are cheap, easy to use, and will fail with a moderate amount of force, so if the drift goes bad and you end up where the bumper might be ripped off, the zip tie will likely fail first, instead of damaging the bumper, or where it mounts to.

Wow, just wow.

On a side note, does anybody know how nuts and bolts got associated with drifting? Or steering wheels, or tires?

takeajourney 01-09-13 02:33 PM

why do you guys have to be such good master debaters lol. now now, but really... it doesnt sound like it was even started in japan bcuz according to that article that History of the Cable Tie, it was invented by two guys from Princeton because friction tape sucked. I agree zip ties makes functional sense with snapping before breaking aero parts. It's just absurd that there's no story with it--- i'm asking the wrong crowd. maybe i should ask JDMzipties x Fatlace haha

takeajourney 01-09-13 02:34 PM

see but they aren't the drifting scene

Because it's cheap and super easy to install/remove?

scrapp 01-09-13 04:18 PM

*ding ding* the wrong crowd.

I have super street issues dating back to somewhere in 04 that talk about using zipties because:

1) it holds stuff together.
2) when you screw up again, chances are the bumper will snap off and go flying to the side, safely.

Done.
