TII Harbor Blue Metallic Hood

Let me start by saying I've done mostly mechanic work. This was my first "real" body and paint job. I've never sprayed base coat or clear coat before. It goes on thicker than I thought. It's fun spraying on the edge of making a run. I enjoyed the work once I figured out the spray gun adjustments. I think my biggest mistake was starting with 150 grit sand paper. I should have used 60 or 80 grit to save time but the hood turned out straight and dent free.

My air compressor puts out 13.6 CFM and this Devilbiss FinishLline gun requires 13 CFM so the compressor ran a lot. I made a condenser for the moisture out of some copper and used a Devilbiss air-water separator. I couldn't maintain a steady 23psi at the gun. When I started spraying the pressure began at 25 then slowly dropped to 20psi. I'm too new to this work to tell if it made any difference in the way the paint sprayed.

The hood had a crack in the aluminum and someone had sprayed it with cheap spray-can primer. I welded a patch under the lip and sprayed it with 2-part self etching primer. Then I used Kustom Shops 2k primer/sealer and Dupont's ChromaBase harbor blue metallic. I think it turned out alright for my first real paint job but I'm still going to color sand it with some wet 2000 grit and polishing compound. Let me know what you think.
