Question Restoring old interior plastics.

Hi Guys, Not been around for a while but hoping to back into my FD after watching this video
Review of the RX-7 and seeing how clean the interior was I was thinking its time to redo mine.

At the moment I have the sticky back fake carbon covering on the heater controls, drivers door switch console and center gear stick console. I know that when I peel back the covering its most likely going to wreck the original plastic rubber covering.

So my question is whats going to be the best way to remove the crappy rubber coating and then repaint the plastic?

I have looked at replacing with second hand parts but they are just as rough.

Cheers
Marcus

BC Oven Cleaner

If you find the old smooth black finish underneath you might try removing it (the finish) with oven cleaner. Local guy did that, and most of the scratches disappeared with the top coat. Result was a smooth black satin finish. He suggests you use a "magic erasure" to rub the coating off the plastic. He has not tried recoating yet.

Perhaps best to try on a scrap piece before tackling your oem.

Oven Cleaner!

Cheers for the reply.

Well I would never have thought of using oven cleaner but I guess its worth a go. I do have the early ones 92 spec so will try it over Christmas and see what happens can't make it any worse.

If I try it before you, I'll let you know how it turns out.
