Please VOTE for the New Date!!!

I just got off the phone with Fontana and April 13-15th is taken by Honda S2k guys.

They reserved over 80% of Fontana (they are expecting 300-500 people).

We need to pick a date asap so that I could lock in the place.. or find another place for the same date (april 13th-15th).

Please vote above!

Ouch. Voted +1 for 6th - 8th.

G's 3rd Gen 12-05-06 08:20 PM

The 6-8 is Easter weekend. It is going to be tough for families and the roads are going to be busy

tom.jelly 12-05-06 08:23 PM

Either date is OK w/me. no sense in competing for lodging (or having to pass all the slower traffic) with another group...

PerkyStina 12-05-06 09:21 PM

I do NOT want to do our event on the same weekend as another group! boooo!!!

I'm all for either weekend!

Fero313 12-05-06 09:43 PM

i agree about Easter weekend, there will be less turnout

SCCAIT7 12-05-06 10:02 PM

That kinda ticks me off... I say we run another weekend...and just show up the weekend of the 2k's also...just as a day trip... Anyway- the 20th is fine.

calvin 12-05-06 10:03 PM

I was comparing against the Mazda Drivers schedule, as they usually have a VIR event near the end of March, but it does not look like it this year....

http://mazdadrivers.com/

They have the tentative dates for VIR set..... so it might conflict a Summit Point event, but those are fruther away.

wish i could go on both dates also, but that's not looking very possible..:(

also, agree that easter weekend is a BAD idea. i don't want to go anywhere near the S.M.N.F. during a holiday weekend. it's already a busy area and when we go we're going to want it as dead as possible. phillip, how did you come up with these new dates? do you know if there is anything else going on the weekend of the 20th?

anyway, i voted 20th. :icon_tup:

blwnrtr93 12-05-06 11:36 PM

The date isn't important to me. I'll wind up taking vacation if I have to in order to be there. Just let me know at least 2 weeks in advance.

88turbotime 12-06-06 12:58 AM

S2000's are sweet. :)

Oh and i voted for easter weekend (before i realized it was easter weekend haha) but it really doesnt matter to me, although i do agree it would be better not to go when there is another group there.

Herblenny 12-06-06 05:42 AM

Opps! Now I remember why we didn't pick April 6th-8th...

If we want least traffic possible, it would be the easter weekend.

April 15-22nd, there will be bunch of kids

I don't think splattering an errant child who wanders onto the roadway would endear us to the locals. Might want to steer clear of that weekend.

I did some search about "the Dam Kids" and this is what I found.. Completely different than what I expected.. I think we are ok for weekend of 20-22nd.

Fontana Dam Kids - From local TV listing

There's much attention being paid to the different celebrations of World War II these days. So we jumped in, as well. Last week, we ventured to Oak Ridge for 'The Battle of Oak Ridge." (That's not the real name we just called it that.) It was a staged reenactment as part of the Secret City Festival, included therein were 150 soldiers, half tracks, jeeps, smoke bombs, and other activities. It was a huge event. It was a depiction of WW II fighting in France. It was a 'visual' story all right. More on it, later.

This week's Heartland episode is of a different struggle. It is based on the celebration of the children of the builders of Fontana Dam. Often, particularly in wartime, huge sacrifices are feely made. Enormous hardships are endured. Tragedy and shock, emotional trauma, these are the products of people at war. America in World War II was no different.

Our story focuses on the children: the "Fontana Dam Kids." It's about the effects of war on the children. We're paying homage to the men and women whose life and work during such trying times cost them so much and in so many ways. But we're also looking at their children who also sacrificed substantially and whose story hasn't been shared quite as often.

Following the depression, many family's were fortunate to find work with TVA constructing the great dams: Norris, Watts Bar, Watauga, and others. Imagine what it must have been like to be the children of the workers who built the Fontana Dam. They were constantly on the move. Going where the work was -- job to job until they finally ended up in the middle of the rugged mountains of western North Carolina. It was a place where before they arrived 14 families scratched out a living in a small village known as Welch's Cove. It was quiet, isolated, pretty much like most mountain communities. And nearby there were four or five other little villages scattered around, half tucked away, too. Suddenly, this place was besieged by 5,000 people hell bent on 'getting a job done.' The job was the construction of the tallest dam in the Eastern United States. It was renamed after a waterfall nearby, and called Fontana. Also, this dam had to be built fast to provide electricity for Alcoa. In fact, it was finished in record time.

Doris Clayton, Dwight Morrow and Bob Dagley, and many others 'lived' -- experienced -- this story as children; sacrifices, hard ships, what we might regard today as 'impossible' tasks were to them routine. Bob Dagley said his family of 4 lived in a 24 foot trailer. His bed replaced the kitchen table each night. In the morning, he packed it away again. Dwight Morrow's grandfather worked the night shift. He didn't have his own bed. He slept in one of the 4 beds in the house while the others worked during the day.

It was a brave new world to these children, but since it was the only world they knew, it seemed 'normal.' This was their ABNORMAL world they grew up in from 1942 until the dam was completed in 1945. Then, as fast as it all started, they were gone. It was over. Most all of the children and families scattered back across the country to the 47 states from which they came.

It was as if it was all a dream. Then in 1986, a strange thing happened: a few of these 'Fontana Dam Kids' as they later began to call themselves, found each other. It was part luck part serendipity. But as fate would have it, while visiting Fontana Resort one day quite by chance, Doris ran into a few of her 'classmates' of 40-50 years ago! Those few classmates contacted others. They worked hard to contact still others and after an enormous effort many of these 'lost children of Fontana' reunited.

They exclaimed that it was as if 'missing years' were finally found. They explained that they never really shared their quite unique experiences of their formative years with anyone. And when they did, no one quite got it. How could they understand? It's like science fiction. Finally they reunited and their childhood experiences could be shared! Tales never told now could be. They said, it was like being an 'alien' and experiencing something that was so unique that few could ever relate to it. Except it was YOUR ENTIRE LIFE! Few had ever experienced the same thing. Or, ever would again.

When 'The Fontana Dam Kids' tell stories about finding 'ONE OF US' as they call it, they light up and almost squeal with excitement and joy

Reunions are now held annually and any Fontana Dam Kid can contact the others via Fontana Dam Resort. Or, contact us here at the Heartland Series and we'll get you hooked up with your old gang, the kids of Fontana Dam: the Fontana Dam Kids.

Anyone else want to change your vote, please post it on this thread as once you vote, you can't change the result. I will tally it up at the end....

But as of now, I'm going to lock in at the Fontana for April 20-22nd.

yeh you can! If you prepare for the exam on time, you could do it.. If you were to cram it.. then you can't.. LOL!

FYI, many many studies have shown, its better to relax day or two before a hard exam to cram it til the day of exam..

Dan, are you going to make it to the event??

hus 12-06-06 01:37 PM

Well I'm looking to change jobs sometime before the new year and so I don't know if I'll be able to go any weekend. I still plan on attending whenever it is as long as my job doesn't interfere and I still have my car...which by the way is still for sale. I haven't really advertised it anywhere since October and just don't really care if it sells or not right now. Anyway, I'm kinda hanging out to dry on the whole DGRR thing right now.

Herblenny 12-06-06 02:09 PM

Hus, hope everything works out and you could join us..

I just got off the phone with Fontana Village and they have blocked off 100 hotels and cabins for us for April 19th - April 22nd, 2007

I will make a seperate thread regarding pricing and such..

Just to let some of you know, the price have gone up a bit.. due to their renovations.. All new hotel rooms and now cabins also.
