Wow.... never noticed how much Ray's motor sits back in the engine bay versus David's. Interesting.....

^ Yep, Chris Carlisi cut out the firewall to move his back versus the Pettit subframe in mine.

Not that I wanted to turn this into a discussion on 3rotor placement but why didn't you opt to push yours back and add more room in the bay?

^ In my opinion, there is no need to go thru the extra cost and hassle of doing that. The idea is to move the weight as far back and as low as possible to achieve better car driving dynamics. So, if you fab up a custom subframe or use one like Defined Autoworks (they didn't have it when I did the conversion) you can lower the engine. You then need to cut up the firewall (not for the Defined kit) and shorten the drivetrain to accomplish the task.

You end up with an engine that is lower mass and further back which is good, but at what cost and will most or any of us notice the difference in driving characteristics? I know I won't as I'm not that good of a driver so for me, it wasn't necessary. I've gone to the track a few times and think the car is very well balanced. My trips through the Tail also tell me this :)

Now guys like Fritz Flynn might notice but we will see in about a month at VIR. I'm very interested in good drivers pushing the car and reporting back. All in all, if I had to do it again, I'd go with the Defined kit versus the Pettit/RX Specialties subframe as lower weight can't be a bad thing, even for us novice drivers :)

If I had to do it again, I would cut the firewall vs. subframe or Defined kit.

They all have issues but to give maximum front end space, the true mid engine like configuration of an FD, keeping OE suspension design, etc. The best way is cut the firewall. Defined kit brings the engine up higher and that was my main issue and hence bringing all the weight down as much as possible.

Also, Pettit kit is same principle as Hinson kit.. actually when Hinson was developing the LS subframe, I convinced Hinson to develop 20B subframe and bump steer issue he corrected on LS swap and Pettit purchased it from Hinson. I have talked to Hinson and there will always be slight bump steer issue.
