What was your life like when you joined Rx-7 club?
Oh, Will also remembers that chat thread. haha
Oh boy.
I still think about "allgameracer" surprisingly often. I was his age when I got my FD... it helped me in some ways. I grew up that faithful fall day.
...
Yeah, so many memories on this small piece of computer equipment.
But I guess, although I still get the same thrill from driving my FD, life got in the way of my evenings passed on the web. Steady girlfriend, more responsabilities, better (but more demanding) job, etc.
I still love browsing the forum, actually I come almost daily, but I don't post much anymore. You get to a point in life when if you don't have anything meaningful to say, then you don't say anything at all.
The forums are still my ressource for a lot of technical questions I have or parts I'm shopping for. I just consider it as a resource, not a place to waste time as I did before

Man there have been some epicly good, bad and funny threads over the years...
I bought my FC in the summer of 1996 - I lived in Montreal but bought my car from a guy in Mississauga (Todd) who had a furniture shop. I still have the original Auto Trader ad! Anyway, it wasn't until a couple years later I really got into the RX7 Internet community. I too spent a LOT of time on that old Bulletin Board site. Most of the time spent on the internet was on the technical forums though, as I spent a good chunk of the 1999-2000 season tearing my engine out and getting it back together!
It wasn't until 2002 when I moved to Ottawa that I really came out to meets and had more of a presence on the boards - I think it was a wednesday night in Orleans that I first met the Ottawa guys and was able to put faces to names. Those were they days when we drove to Montreal on a whim for Bar B Barn and the car show. lol
No matter how many douchebags come and go, this certainly is quite the community.

Funny story... well I think it is, you guys can judge. Back when I was fixing up my first car, an 88 Chevy Celebrity that was given to me for free, but needed ALOT of work to be road worthy, I was working on it at the Base Borden auto club and there were two FB's that some army guys bought and were going to build into one runner. I thought to myself on numerous occasions, why would anyone want that ugly f---ing car. Hmmmm.
I certainly didn't know that 3 long carless years later (long story involving illegal actions) I would be the very PROUD owner of the very car I scoffed at earlier.
The story goes like this. With a recently cleared MTO record I was in the market for a car. I had a couple grand in the bank, but also wanted to get out of the dead end roof truss building job I had, so I decided to look into a loan to get my hands on a 240SX and then I would spend my personal savings on tractor trailer school. Got the loan and one day when my mother was driving me home from work we passed by an autobody shop, and saw this nice little silver car sitting out front. A quick double take and I had identified it as an RX-7, but wasn't thinking about turning around. I was still set on a 240. I guess I have my mom to thank for saying "what's it going to hurt to look?" Guess what. I never looked at another car. I mulled it over for a week, went back and handed the guy a wad of cash. I still have the picture of the cash fanned out on my desk. Made me feel rich. After seeing what some others have payed for theirs, I do regret not looking harder for other, cheaper 7's but not once have I regretted buying that car. 3 years later and I'm way more knowledgable about my car, thanks in part to this very forum, and will take any chance I get to talk shop with anyone who will listen. I think I even annoy my friends that aren't so automotively inclined.
Now I've been driving truck for a little over two years, and finally have a job that pays me well enough to pay down my debts, so that in a year or two I'll be able to finish her up the way she deserves. It's a shame I don't live somewhere warmer, where I can enjoy her year round, but I guess the months spent without her make me appreciate the fun I have even more. By the way, her name is Nikki.

LOL I grew up. Gained a bit of taste and intelligence. I realized that little Hondas, while easy to make go fast, have no character when sitting side by side with a hundred others. My car, to me, stands out. And when I'm done with it, it will stand out even more, I hope. No it hasn't gotten me any girls, but on the other hand, and luckily, no tickets either, though I have done things to deserve them and even been tailed twice. It sits just below the radar due to it's small size and dated yet tasteful lines. Tailout action in a Honda? Better have snow.

damn...this thread is making me reconsider trying to sell my car.
i have been a total car nut since seeing things like WRC and F1 on TV, movies like Ronin, Gone in 60 Seconds...i don't know, i always liked cars.
and i had some odd fascination with RX-7s and the rotary engine...also the fact that choices are limited for a cheap, RWD sports coupe.
i saved up money all through high-school, and after just finishing my first year of university i used all my saved money to purchase my FC. i joined this club around then...man, can't believe it's been that long.
i have met lots of great people through here. even if i sell my RX-7, i don't think i will ever really leave this place.

My friend bought an 87 T2 in highschool, and I still remember it rocking my socks.
After buying a beater AW11, I was in the market for a decent car. I wanted RWD I wanted a following, and I wanted it original...
An FC was always in the back of my mind, but I didn't want to fill it every week...
I almost bought a 924 turbo but then fell in love with 7's. (deeply)
I joined the forum and scoped for a couple months. Found a good deal on an s5 t2 and here I am. In 3 months I've gone through 2 parts cars, and I'm loving it.
When I bought my car I was ready to be broke. Kinda sucks as now I'm broke, and I'm not even putting cash into the car.... **** life!

Man, it's hard to even remember as it's been that long ago.
Some highlights:
I remember the first meet up in Vaughan (at the Staples) that Sean had suggested. Meet a few of my now really close friends there that day. I had first met Silverocket at Fairview along w/a couple of others and cruised up
I remember helping to organize the first Canadian major meet which eventually became the "Ottawa" meet as people were worried about not getting 94 octance gas for their 3rd gens once we got out of southern Ontario. It turned out to be one of the best meets I had been too.
Been here during the hack, then the major forum crashing chat thread, and a whole lot of other things that happened such as many Ottawa meets, first MOM meet, many other beater meets and summer happenings.
Went to Sevenstock 7 in 2004 with a few of the hardcore guys which was too short but was an absolute blast!
Remember meeting the Feds for the first time selling him some parts and many other memories, which would take me forever to jog my memory.....
Now while I don't have an Rx-7 anymore, I have an Rx-8 and one of my daughters is named "Savanna".
It's been a good community to me over the years!!!

When I joined this forum I was in my first year of college, in a program I would later switch out of.
I was a total n00b (cue hecklers). Someone approached me and said "if you can fix this car, you can have it" and I went from there. I knew nothing about cars, and even less about rotary engines. I opened the hood and everything in there was "the engine" - the battery, radiator, carburetor, air filter, everything was "the engine" because it was in "the engine bay". I would open the Heynes, point at a random doodad and say "ooh, what's that" and look it up.
At the time I was driving a 1991 Dodge Shadow with an old set of Creative Labs FPS1000 speakers spliced into the back of the deck. I put that car through hell and it did fairly well of not dying on me.
I worked part time as a tuxedoed waiter to put together cash for my 7, and spent hours and hours reading every post in the 1st Gen section, and practically memorizing the FB Heynes manual from cover to cover.
In a way it was nice since nobody expected anything from my FB. It had sat there for 5 years, so nobody cared if it sat there for 5 more. If (when) I tore apart the rat's nest, the carb, and all associated junk and couldn't put it back together, it wasn't a big deal. Nowadays I have trouble taking off the road for more than a weekend in summer!
I once tried to cheap out Will and Silverocket when buying a stock carb because I was broke, that was a shitty way to meet the first two local guys in the club, lol. At the time I had never seen a 2bbl side-draft carb before and my jaw dropped when Silverocket opened his hood!
I learned where *not* to jack the car from. I proudly told everyone at the meet the year I got it on the road that CP Racing would be tuning it, lol. The numerous stupid mistakes I made as a young rotorite are almost uncountable but at least I never riced-out my ride despite how many crazy ricers live in this town.
My car ended up in photoshoped pictures with the Titanic, the Last Supper, and others...
Much has changed. From my original plan of "just restore it to stock" to where it is now, I've had a ton of fun, met some awesome folks, made some embarrassing mistakes and loved every minute of it.
Now I'm building my second FB, after having convinced two other friends of mine to get FBs and helping them build theirs. I'm in the "real world" now, with a College Diploma in CS and almost 3 years being the main tech at an awesome staffing firm in Ottawa. I've become a mod, helped plan a cruise, and took 3rd place in my class in Autocross. I've rebuilt a 12a, and in fact an entire car this past summer (Project Keiko), and nothing in that engine bay seems like a mystery anymore. My 7 has survived through a 4yr relationship that went bad... And to think there was a time when I considered giving up Naomi (my FB) for Angela (my ex). Well the girl is gone, but the car remains, and I wouldn't take back a minute of it. Well, okay, maybe I'd take back a few minutes here and there, but overall I've had a blast and plan to have even more awesome times with these cars and these folks.
Cheers,
Jon
