What Is Faster????

Just found a thread on a Speed world Challenge site. The poster(?) has tracked down the lap times of the various race series that raced at Mid Ohio and put up their fastest laps for comparison. It is very interesting, to say the least.....

Here's lap times for all 4 Series at Mid-Ohio this year. The Grand-Am GT cars are a lot slower then ALMS GT2. Really the Grand-Am GT car is like a GT3

ALMS GT1 1:17.186

ALMS GT2 1:21.369

GRAND AM GT 1:29.414

WORLD CHALLENGE GT 1:27.536

-------------------------- Other Times---------------
ALMS LMP1: 1:10.751

ALMS LMP2: 1:10.113

DP: 1:21.190

IndyCar: 1:06.313

World Challenge TC: 1:32.946

Grand-AM GS: 1:33.355

Grand-AM ST: 1:38.030

NASA Super Unlimited: 1:27.23

NASA American Iron Extreme: 1:31.384

I love these comparisons as they tend to provide facts to calm down arguments. I will use this information to figure out how fast some of these cars would run at Mosport.

The differentials all look realistic except maybe the Indycar. I'd guess that at least LMP1 and perhaps some LMP2's would be quicker.

The NASA numbers are a surprise as I'm not sure how well safety is mandated in their series.

I wish I would have bought one of those "Grand Am Sucks" t-shirts from Sebringfans.com when they were available. Damn prototurtles.

Watch World Challenge's taped coverage of Touring and GT this Saturday and be thankful you didn't join us at Road Atlanta... More carnage and confusion then you'll ever hope to see in a sportscar race.

What else is interesting is that earlier this year (May), Simon Pagenaud tested a Panoz Champ Car there. He was alone on the track and ended up setting a time of 1:06.28. While that is really close to the Indy Car time, I'll bet that at a race weekend they'd knock of a significant amount more. In 2003 Paul Tracy had the pole for the last CC race there at 1:07.058 in a Lola. Still interesting to see how close (or far apart) many of these series are!
