Took The Insight To The 1/4 Mile

I was waiting to do this for a month, but finally, last Friday, it was not raining. I picked up a friend around 7:30, arrived in Sparta at the St. Thomas Dragway around 8PM, and we proceded to make 7 runs until it finally closed at 10PM (at which point it started raining...good timing).

The car ran faster then I thought it was as I was expecting 20 seconds or there abouts. Launching is hard due to the fact it is front wheel drive, I had the tires pumped up to 50 PSI and because the electric torque sort of suddenly kicks in. I ended up spinning the wheels for the first 60ft, hence the low 60ft times.

Here are the two quickest runs:

Reaction: 1.015 <--First time in a year I have launched
60 FT Time: 2.809
330 FT Time: ---
1/8th Mile ET: 11.991
1/8th Mile Speed: 59.23
1/4th Mile ET: 18.499
1/4th Mile Speed: 74

Reaction: 0.847
60 FT Time: 2.854
330 FT Time: 8.083
1/8th Mile ET: 12.385
1/8th Mile Speed: 58.13
1/4th Mile ET: 18.557
1/4th Mile Speed: 71.61 <--let off too early

Oddly enough, I would venture to say that my Insight was on average with most of the Hondas there.

Also worth noting was a white GSL-SE that lost the infamous driver side heater hose at the end of the run, and a horrible-ass-ugly white 'vert. I mean, this vert was horrible. Blue chicken wire, huge ugly wing, hood scoop 4 inches tall and only 1 inch from the bumper (looked like a deformed nose...complete with chicken wire), LED washer fluid squirters, body kit made of aluminium siding, etc...I will be a happy man if I never see that car again...

Anyway, a good time was had by all and I hope to get back in the next coming weeks...

hahaha Aaron you are a funny guy. I gotta take the 97 escort sport to the track and see what those 110 horses can really do. Hopefully I can run an 18 as well

Cheers! 06-03-03 06:06 PM

pics!

Terrh 06-03-03 07:54 PM

me and you should run.. my cavy runs about 18.4 @70MPH.. LOL

my 60' times are a little better tho... like 2.3-2.4

215s + auto trans = nice launch :)

TYSON 06-03-03 09:16 PM

The Intrepid owns you!!!:D

Featuring 200 hp, 3500 lbs + 250 lbs of tools and books over the non-drive wheels!! Slightly slipping tranny for extra traction at the line!! Luxury seating for 18!! (not a guarantee)

Do we need to setup a second car Smackdown???:p:

IAN 06-03-03 09:35 PM

I wonder what my eagle talon would run:)

TYSON 06-03-03 09:38 PM

That's cheating 'less it's a second gen non-turbo.:p:

Terrh 06-03-03 11:53 PM

first gen talon non-turbos aint' exactly quick, either... especially in automatic trim.. 2.0 + 4wd + heavy != fast.

blkrx7 06-04-03 07:06 AM

They didn't make a non-turbo 4wd, all the 4wd's were turbo, but there were N/A as well as Turbo Fwd's.

Aaron, try dropping your tire pressure 20 or 30 pounds :) That'll drop your 60' time and improve your ET. You might crack into the 17's, and that'll really start to embarrass more than one Civic :)

Paul

TYSON 06-04-03 07:35 AM

What was your fuel mileage running down the track?:)

Are you sure? I've been in one. :) The kid lives just down the street from me, in fact....

Aaron Cake 06-04-03 11:16 AM

Unfortunately, I don't have any pics. But I did see some jaws drop when I did the first burnout. :D

Yeah, next time I'll drop the tire pressure. I just didn't want to be bothered last Friday. I think tht with those skinny little tires, 12PSI would be more appropriate then 20...

BTW, mileage for each run was roughly 74.4 MPG. :D

that was the best one-liner ever. :D

MORE BURN OUTS! i want pics of insight doing burnout.

blkrx7 06-04-03 03:25 PM

Terrh, i'm certain. Look around, see if you can find a single example.

You *CAN* pull the turbo from a 4wd car, but it wasn't made that way, nor would I see a reason why you'd do it.

The only 4wd Talons were of the "TSI" marquee, and TSI means turbo. But TSI's were availible in either FWD, or 4wd.

Terrh 06-04-03 03:47 PM

blkrx7: I have, a friend of mine owns one!

It's a blue 1991? talon. AWD. No turbo. 5 speed.

blkrx7 06-04-03 04:13 PM

Terrh, that may be, I don't doubt someones come up with that odd idea of makng one, but it didn't come that way from the factory is all i'm saying. He had to pull the turbo from the engine and install N/A manifolds to that puppy. Or did an engine swap to N/A. You'll notice the "T" in Eagle Talon Tsi, does in fact, designate a turbo :) And no 4wd units exist, that were not branded "Tsi" hence, all were turbo out of the factory.

Perhaps your friend just nuked a turbo and ditched it for some odd reason? Or perhaps the previous owner?

Can anyone find another designation? Or a website showing one? I'm open to the idea, but until someone presents one..it's as elusive as the N/A 3rd gen, and just as genuine :)

Most likely, it's had a motor swap, so it's a just a one off peice. Not a "They make them N/A and 4wd", unless "they" is cletus down at the pick-u-pull ;)

I went and saw the car yesterday.. Engine looks origional, so if it was done, it was done long ago. :)

No TSI badging anywhere. Just has the AWD badging. Definatly not a turbo car, there ain't no turbo anywhere near that engine. :)

No boost gauge inside the car either, but I don't know anything about these... did the turbo cars have anything else to differentiate them from non-turbos?

TYSON 06-05-03 02:03 PM

Look under the back. Labels mean nothing.

No differential = no AWD

4wd units had TSi's plastic badges on the rear, had the Turbo DOHC stickers down the side panels, engines were 180d reversed in the bay (so on the AWD Turbos the battery sat on the passenger side, air cleaner on the passenger side, and the N/A had the opposite), they have a very small guage on the dash for turbo pressure. Bump in the hood for the Cam Cover to clear the hood (mostly cosmetic though).

The turbos are *TINY* and VERY easy to miss. It resides under the exhaust manifold heatshield, and the compressor is around the size of a fist.

Take a few pictures, one of under the hood, and one of under the back, or even just under the back. I'll bet it's just a FWD N/A.

Did he tell you it was 4wd, or do you know it's 4wd?

TYSON 06-05-03 04:40 PM
