So... I finally own my car
Where to begin?
So in late October, I was bored at work and decided to shop auto trader for cars I had a "crush" on growing up. I stumbled across a 1992 JDM RHD FD in Calgary for $6000 at a used car dealer. I gave a call on a whim and offered $4000 sight unseen to take the car off their hands, I figured it had problems if it was going that cheap, and it does, they told me before I bought it that the motor was blown in it. Before I sent any money, I made sure they forwarded me all the required documentation to register the car, I didn't want to get caught with a car that was effectively a paperweight. Papers arrive, all is good. I make arrangements to have the car transported from Calgary to Toronto. I went to pick up my car from the shipping company on the second week of November and.... uh-oh. All the paperwork I had was for car FD3S102846. Sitting in front of me is FD3S110337. The dealership had lost all the original documentation to my car and only had photocopies. Thus I have spent the past month on the phone trying to track down the correct paperwork for my vehicle. I found a customs agent in Calgary that I promised my first born child to if she would send me another copy of my Form 1. Once it arrived I marched down to the ministry to get my car registered only to find out that CBSA sent me their yellow copy of my car's Form 1 and the ministry will only accept a white copy. After calling them paper racists I had to go to CBSA Toronto where they reissued my Form 1. Back to the ministry. Now they demanded a copy of my Export Certificate. I had never heard of an Export Certificate, a google search later and I've hired JEVIC Japan to get me a new one. (Reasonable price, $60 USD shipped to my door with a translation) Back to the ministry again. White Form 1, translated Export Certificate. Now I'm told that the stamped, certified translation of my Export Certificate isn't good enough. I need to get it translated by someone in Ontario. Off to Mississauga I go to the approved Japanese Translator. He basically takes a quick look at the translation I already have, says it's perfectly translated, stamps it and charges me $80.00 Back to the ministry again. FINALLY get the car registered. I've never been so pleased to pay hundreds in taxes to get a silly piece of paper. But at least now the restoration can begin without me worrying I'll never be able to drive the car. Oh, and if anyone ever has a paperwork problem with registering a JDM FD, shoot me a note, I've crossed all the bridges for getting lost paperwork back. -Geoff |

I may take you up on the offer, the guy I bought from to date has not given me the import and maintenance paperwork. I hope to get it this by this spring, but the car was already register with all Canadian authorities. But personally I still would like to have all the paperwork.

As for your paperwork, a good portion of the paperwork on your car goes off into thin air when the vehicle first gets registered with the province. I no longer have a Form 1 or an Export Certificate. They're property of the province now. -Geoff |
I am trying to figure out HOW the shipping company Shipped you a Car across Canada with the WRONG VIN Number.
Wouldn't that be Like THEFT?(loose term)..and just where is that 'other car'? |

When I hired the company to pick up the car from Calgary, they wanted to know: Year/make/Model VIN I figured someone would have checked to make sure the right car was going on the train. I'm not sure where the other car is, however I think I legally own it (or I could, as I have all the paperwork to register it). It was a legitimate SNAFU, they sent me all the papers for a yellow 1992 FD, it was just the WRONG yellow 1992 FD. All is solved now, but not without a lot of footwork. -Geoff |
Interested in knowing which inept car dealer this was?? Sure some local boys here would like to know....

I'll buy all the other paper work off of you if you wanna sell it.
And then go find my car. |
