rx7 specialties in calgary alberta good or bad?

i am going to get some work done at the rx7 specialties shop in calgary, just wanted some feedback because a few guys said they didn't have very good luck there.... the shop is very convient as i only like about a half mile away, but if they are gonna mess my rx7 up and overcharge me i would just rather not bother.... i am getting an 84/85 engine ported and polished installed with a holley intake and a header exhaust system... he wants 4700 to do the job... i would like feedback on what he wants me to pay and what you guys have heard or have experienced from his shop?

thanks a bunch

SAiamNE 04-23-07 08:52 PM

I've had good luck with him. My car wouldn't idle and he ended up putting on a new used complete intake on.. Cost me $400 but got the job done. It sounded pretty fair for a used complete intake and labour.

Alak 04-23-07 10:15 PM

Best Bet is to do a search. He seems to be doing some pretty good work of late, I've heard no reicent complaints. Seems he takes more time and quality to get the job done.

Is he using new housings, irons? Rotors? Should post more details.

Twizzle-sticks 04-23-07 10:27 PM

I've heard bad stories and bad things about rx-7 specialties.. So im iffy about them although i've had no personal experience with them.

Archangels 04-23-07 10:36 PM

AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

now 04-23-07 11:52 PM

here we go again...

MrSector9 04-23-07 11:59 PM

I bought some stuff and he treated me fine. I have no comments on his building skills or pricing for anyone else but me.

dawinder 04-24-07 12:41 PM

i got some work done from them things was fine with me i had good luck with them....

WanKeL FD RX-7 04-24-07 05:05 PM

i just got a new rebuild engine for my fd from them, really happy with the quality of the engine, started just fine, runs great and service with adam is a-1.

SAiamNE 04-24-07 09:22 PM

Don't knock it before you try it!

Ozmodiar-X 04-24-07 09:38 PM

I had my engine rebuilt with a port and when i got it was really clean workmanship. Runs awesome so far. (4000Km)

black93RX7 04-24-07 10:47 PM

Adam build my 20B, it runs great. Its the second motor he has built for me.

Also, worked at his shop for a while. For an engine rebuild I recommend him.

gerrychuck 04-24-07 11:49 PM

I had Adam do an S5 turbo swap for me in December; he and his guy worked their tails off (until 7:00 pm on a Friday) to complete the job so I could take the car back to Sask in one day. Slight problem with hooking up the vacuum lines incorrectly on the boost controller solenoid, but it was easily figured out and corrected, and understandable considering how they had to rush to finish the job for me. Adam was very reasonable in what he charged me as well. No complaints and I'd take the car back to him again.

Revisiting old posts can answer lots of questions

This post should be closed please. It's like visiting the Calgary tower every 6 months. Very predictable outcome always happens. You go up the tower ... you go down the tower... ahhh the testament to mankind leaves you breathless.

Every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. Remember when I took that home wine making course and I forgot how to drive?

I agree with the closure. But it looks like the Haters may have moved on.

Smitter 04-25-07 09:58 AM

^^ Searching old posts will just bring up alot of the old bullshit that isnt true or over exagerrated....bottom line is that Adam builds a strong engine.....i know cause i have one...he also backs them 100% so if u do have a problem he will fix it....i suggest if u need a rebuild to not hesitate to use Rx7 Specialties.....get your name on the build list....cause it gets longer and longer by the day

black93RX7 04-26-07 03:40 PM

yeah, smitter has a good engine, too bad he just doesn't know how to drive

84stock 04-26-07 08:20 PM

He drives as good as any of the girls, be nice. A little practice and he'll be able to keep up with the rest uf us.

Smitter 04-26-07 08:45 PM

^^thx for the ribbing boys.....but we all know my real last name is andretti

who just got there licence yanked....hmm....was it me or black93rx7........and yeah i suppose it was the deers fault when u hit it on the way to sevenstock???
thx for leaving my passenger side door handle intact....u puss....haha

jazzmanbob 04-26-07 09:17 PM

I got a built up motor from Adam about 2 years ago. Also bought some RB springs from him. Took a few month to get my motor but I told him to take his time building it, I wanted a good, solid motor. Took me the rest of the year to get it installed and running, So far so good, motor runs great but I havent wound it out only 300 km since I put it on the road. I needed help to get it started and to sort some of the vacuum hose routing and he spent an hour os so on the phone guiding me through the process. He knows his rotaries.
My motor: Street Port, Turbo Housings, high compression rotors, lightened rotating assembly, Bonez intake, Racing Beat Headers, Bonez High flow catcon, unknown cat back.
I would deal with him again.

Marek 04-26-07 09:41 PM

From my experience is that he's a really really busy man. Cash talks with him. It was a PITA to talk to him but as soon as I gave him the money my parts were shipped promptly and correctly. I would highly recommend him, just be patient with him knowing he's non stop busy.

Mark

Here we go, everybody ready?

Just kidding. Listen I suggest doing a search, most of what you'll find is not bullshit, and it's good to know.

I don't suggest bringing your car there, and if you've seen what I've seen you wouldnt want to. With that said you havent seen what I've seen so you'll probably bring it there anyways.

Adam is capable of building a motor that runs for the average person, it won't be a spectacular motor, it won't be a particularily strong motor, but it will start and run, and the average person provided they know that going in is content with that. And from the sounds of it, if it doesnt run he's been pretty good lately about dealing with that so.....

I have no desire to get in a flame war again, primarily cause I'm so out numbered on this forum now ;) so this thread doesnt need to get closed I'll stay civil provided others do the same:D

Alak 04-27-07 10:38 AM

Money Talks. Speed = $$$$. How Fast do you want to pay?

Theres alot of really good hobbiest rotary builders around. They tend to be VERY BUSY and difficult to get ahold of, as well as find. But a few of them are worth the hassle and wait.

Glad to see youaround TD07. Forum was beginning to seem a little......how do you say?.....Cold. :D

maxthe7man.........thought u hung it up on here...this thread wouldnt be the same without u

eoph 04-27-07 11:21 PM

Regardless, I wouldn't drop $4700 initially into any shop that I just heard about. Also knowing Adam, it may end up more than that if things don't go smoothly.........

84stock 04-27-07 11:27 PM

Funny, we haven't heard anything more from our poster.

Come on man, we've been down this road, you know I'm not Max, I'm sure 84stock (Gary) can vouche for that as well. Shit show Adam my posts he'd be able to figure out who it is fairly quickly.

Where did our original poster go?

Busted7 04-28-07 07:38 PM

I had Adam do my 93 motor it dynoed 420 at 12 lbs. I ran it at the track and it went 10.8 at 127 mph. I cant complain it just cost money, either him or someone else!

bj4life 04-28-07 10:28 PM

haha i am here, just went down and seen him, very impressed for how busy he was he took easily an hour just to chat with me and didn't pressure me into anything... it was a very good experience and i am definetly going to use him if i do decide to rebuild the motor port it etc...

TD07 04-28-07 11:18 PM

Hope it all works out:D

GreenTea 04-29-07 12:25 PM

my personal experience with them was very good.... but it's been long time since i got something from them. (about 4-5 years)
still same ppl running the store?

Smitter 04-29-07 01:11 PM

Here's a link to that guy who ran the 10 second 1/4 mile on one of adams motors

sadly ... his engine just gave out this week end.

yeah, well we have at least 5 ppl who's engines DIED within the last few months.... all from RX7 Specialties ....
2 of them blew at the Steve Kan tuning, and 1 barely a month after AND WHILE RUNNING LOW BOOST (13psi).

and one of the engine isnt dead but is smoking BADLY and he tried to put the blame on a turbo. the thing is we tryed with at least 5 different turbo.
so he sent his engine BACK AGAIN, and Adam didnt find anything (like he would admit having made a mistake) so THE CLIENT ended having to pay for 4 trips in total of shipping and for absolutely NOTHING but a smoking engine...
and took him like 6 months to find a certain paintcolor for an engine for a 13B-REW (Blue Pepsi) he said its because the paint came from Australia, but its funny cause ive ordered a complete FMIC kit and it barely took 2 weeks.

sTaLa PM, im in Montreal. ill refer you to a great shop that is located in Ontario, does A1 job and charges less then what ur gonna pay.
oh and whos customer service is probably one of THE BEST beside ppl like Pettit Racing!!!

*i am nice enough not to yell that shops name, since this thread is about rx7 specialties*

WanKeL FD RX-7 07-03-07 12:57 AM

Ok guys, my engine died saturday night with 5500kms on rx7 specialties rebuilt engine. I won't blame Adam Heyman for the engine, I think it was a good engine, I think the tune by steve kan was good too. A/F ratios were in the 10's, fuel pressure was good. The engine blew in second gear at approx 5500 rpm at 13psi.

I took the compression on the engine, front rotor is 90psi all three faces and rear rotor is 0 psi on three faces so it looks like the 3 apex seals on the rear rotor are fucked. I think it can be a defective part like an injector, I don't know, the engine was running so great.

I'm pissed off a lil bit to pull the engine another time but it's part of the game, we'll figure out what caused the failure and hopefully it will run in august.

Max

Alak 07-03-07 01:35 AM

Its nice to see you diagnose the problem before they point the finger. I know the other guys on here have done this, so their finger was NOT pointed in the wrong direction.

Manntis 07-03-07 04:10 AM

I bought 4 brake rotors from them for my '85 GSL-SE. They gave me 4 boxes marked as such. When I opened one to discover it contained a rear rotor for an FC (5 bolt pattern) they refused to take it back and exchange it for the part I ordered and paid for.

This sounds very similar to what happened to ShaunO's motor. Adam tore his motor down and claimed massive detonation that took out all the apex seals. This despite the fact it was running good af's and nobody present during the pull herd a lick of detonation, pretty close to the same boost and rpm levels I would say. I wasnt there for that motor tear down so I can't comment on what the inside of the motor looked like.

Since your motor is under warranty I doubt highly you would be willing to tear it down yourself and have a look? Or will you just ship it in one piece back to Adam? I would be very interested to know what another party felt about the cause of the motors failure.

Crymson 07-03-07 03:15 PM

When did Shaun's motor go? Just recently?

Yeah, when did this happen? Shauns car ran awesome last time I talked to him/seen him.

I keep offering to buy it, but he just doesnt want to let it go....... :icon_tup:

TD07 07-03-07 06:21 PM

I'm sorry. I didnt mean to mislead anyone. This happened to Shaun's motor a few years back. The senario sounded very similar. Shaun had Adam rebuild it, and to my knowledge that motor has run fine for Shaun since and is still in the car.

silverrotor 07-03-07 06:49 PM

I think we are done here...that goes for both threads.

In any event, when one wants to look Into Into a shops "way of how they conduct themselves" I recommend that they do a SEARCH. It's the same old whenever one these threads re-appear with multiple (re-appearing) posts and dubious characters opposing what they say now versus previous, for example.
