RX7 Fred

I talked with this guy on a few occasions but most recently a few days ago and he really set me straight on a few things, lol.

Me and RX7wieler were at freddy's talking about my 6port->turbo project and i said i was going to use a SAFC with the stock ECU, and basically he said i shouldn't go to any of the tuners in winnipeg cause he knows how to tune an ecu better. hmm...

I made some references to Forum members that have done this conversion (namely Aaron cake), and he said that i should only listen to reputable engine builders and that anybody else on the internet is either lying or just saying stuff with nothing to back it up. (As far as i know fred has built 0 engines that are currently running)

When i asked him about removing the cats he said "just put in a cherry bomb muffler" I told him i was pretty sure that a rotary can melt those mufflers, but he insisted that it would work. He also had some elaborate idea of making the 6port work with that setup, so i said a lot of guys use the air pump to open the ports. He laughed and basically said that was a stupid idea.

He also told me that steel braided hoses are complete garbage because the nylon hose on the inside is weak and always blows. You should only use rubber heater hose for turbo oiling.

I should make this clear, freddy is definately not COMPLETELY full of sh!t, and he usually says things that make sense, but these gave me the chuckles.

needless to say, he is basically on a parts only basis with me.

Sounds like some who "thinks" he knows it all. Sure there are a lot of bullshitters out there..... Take the Camden basher for example, how many have any hands on experience with them, look at what someone has and had before you listen to their veiws. Then there is Aaroncake, look at what he has done and documented. You gotta respect his documentation! Sure he experimented and had some trial and error, but than again he has had success and the decency to document both. I would refer to him as an honest pioneer! Always look at ones true hands on experience before you judge...

unseen, not sure what the point of your post is . there are only a handful of people who know or care who fred is. he doesn't participate in this board and therefore can't defend himself. it is possible he feeds shit to those who talk it , you may want to consider that.

Unseen24-7 01-23-08 08:54 AM

Basically what i was trying to say is if you ever talk to him, take what he says with grain of salt...or a whole handful. Id hate to see someone f up their car cause of misinformation.

thats all

Who or what is an "RX-7 Fred"? Some local shop owner, or a forum member?

I agree partly that running the stock ECU with an S-AFC is not necessarily the best solution, but it certainly works and handles anything the stock HT-18 will dish out just fine.

The Cherry Bomb will work as a rear muffler as long as the cats are in place, though they won't last as long as a stainless packed unit and will sound horrible.

There are rubber hoses out there that will work fine for high pressure oil lines. Some are even press fit and don't use clamps. Your local hydraulic shop can provide these at a cost comparable to braided stainless.

Everything has an element of truth, even though once it's 3rd or 4th hand the original message is a little confused.

Oh, also you can send this person to my website if he has any questions. :)

Fred is a local winnipeg 7 enthusiast that is 50 + that has been working on RX7s since the early 80's . He has been in the car business his whole life and at one time had 40 RX7's in his back yard . He currently has about 15 cars, sheds full of parts, and about 20 dismantled engines in his "shop" area. He has raced 7's in the province as well . He is is a bit eccentric ( no pun intended) and I'm not sure whta he actually does for a living ( none of my business), but he is an invaluable resource for our cars in winnipeg. The local mada dealership gives him referrals.

Freds are usually pretty smart people. :D

Fred knows his stuff about RX-7s, he's just a little pricey and likes the term, "good enough." I don't ask him how to do something. I only ask him if he has what i need.

84stock 01-23-08 10:17 PM

I don't know. I think I'd rather have Barney Rubble work on my car before Fred Flintstone.:rlaugh:

back like 6 yrs ago when I had an FB, fred worked on my car... hes been working on rx7 for 20-25yrs now.... and that is ALL he works on... So I would think he knows a little at least... I wouldnt trust him with my FD, just to put it in perspective. And yes, he is effing cheap ($40-55/hr is pretty effing cheap for a mechanic) and he does like the term "good enough", he smokes a lot of pot after all (or at least when I knew him, and he was 45yrs old then, so I'd assume hes still into it now)
