Ottawa Porting? $$$? mods???
 

Ive search the Second Gen part of the forum and no one actually give a price or location where to get ports done so if anyone in Ottawa has had it done by some one could you let me know where and how much it cost. I put my 1986 RX7 GXL N/A straight pipe and have short ram, and I do 16.269 on 1/4 mile. So if anyone has low cost mods that I can do before this Saturday that would be cool cuz my buddy in his Nissan 240sx wants to race me again cuz I lost when I was stock but when I went straigh I beat him and now he is going straigh pipe so I dont want to lose against him and I want him to eat his words. So ANY low cost mods I can do to show him up and piss him off would be great as well. What is the recomended spark plug wire size that I should get? and what spark plugs cuz I'm do for a change up. Well first of all, porting is not a "low cost mod". It requires the engine to be pulled out and torn apart, then rebuilt again.
Second....all this talk of straight pipe scares me and makes my ears bleed!

I know porting will cost alot, I want to know how much and where in Ottawa I can get it done. Why do your ears bleed because of straight pipe, gave me better time on 1/4 mile. and its not that loud.

Does your buddy have a gold 240? If so, we met him at the autocross yesterday. He said your car was slow.;)

Ok, enough stirring the pot. First thing to do is make sure that the car is in good running order - clean and gap the plugs, clean the filter, check your spark plug leads - all that stuff. As far as cheap mods, weight reduction is the cheapest way to go!

I don't think it's him. I don't remember the name of the fellow driving the black RX-7 there but i do remember him saying it was an 88. unless he corrected himself now it's some one else hiding in the shadows of the ottawa chapter ;)

I don't know if there is anyone in ottawa that ports rotary's. Some of us have ported our own engines, for eg. Nik, rx_prez and and myself. But we pretty much just ordered the templates from either mazdatrix or racing beat and followed that.

Whatever you do, don't go to RX7 Heaven be forewarned ;)

You are thinking of the guy in the black Rx - Jordan I think his name was. I'm talking about the guy in the gold 240 who was parked beside us. He was telling Jason and I about his friend with an '86 who he could beat at the drag strip.

The drive home was ok - but getting to Canadian tire was somewhat tricky! There was almost no fluid left by the time I got to the store, so slowing down wasn't easy! Once I put more fluid in, getting home was ok... slow but ok. Now I just have to fix it.

Yes i was thinking about the guy in the black RX, I didn't talk to much to the owner of the 240 though.

not to hijack the thread, so i'll chime in:

i know of no place in the Ottawa area that specifically does porting on a rotary engine. you will have to go to the toronto area to find these, and even then it is limited to 1 or 2 places, or at least 1 or 2 places you can trust.

your options are basically:

- buy a rebuilt engine that is ported
- send your engine or internal parts (housings) to get ported; there are a few places in Canada, and many in the United States
- port the engine yourself (possibly with help from others); requires taking the entire engine apart, porting, and then putting it back together.

beating a stock 240sx is easy, just don't expect to beat much else faster without spending some decent $$$, seriously making the car light, or "slapping" on a turbo.

Well, I guess it would depend on how straight piped it is.....like if you have a straight through resonator and a straight through muffler that are packed with stainless steel or fibreglass, it will definatly take the edge off the noise!! But if your talking about a complete straight pipe right from the manifold.....then your crazy.....cause that is LOUD!!!!

If you have the motor out and dissassembled and have the irons ready for porting, then send them to me. Call around to some of these "professional" rotary shops and see what they charge for porting, and I'll beat any price out there.

Quick Answer:
I ran the autocross at the Corel Centre yesterday (it was Awesome) - but blew a brake line as I lined up for my fourth run. It was the hard line under the car, so now I have to replace it. Getting home was... interesting.

so it was the hard lines going to the rear calipers?
yeah, that scares me, lol. now that i am upgrading the whole brake system and putting in SS lines i'm scared some of the lines might blow due to possible increased pressure...

Ottawa is shit for any kind of rotory work, let alone porting. That is why we do everything ourselves.

I knew next to nothing about rotary when I got into, except for the talk from the other guys when I rode along to a couple of meets. I managed to get my engine out, aprt, ported, together. Mind you I wouldnt say i did a perfect job, but I havent encountered and major problem yet. You just need to make sure to read up and follow FSM's and other manuals, etc... Mind you it has taken me a while to get the car going again... The ottawa crew is great for helping people out. You should come out to meet people when we have meets. If you decide to do it yourself people will usually be more than happy to help.

Speaking of meets. Orleans some of the RX-7 guys meet there at around 5 - 6pm and stay till about 8pm, then it's a nice little cruise and BBQ :D

Yah my buddy did drive the gold 240sx he is from Gatineau and it is stock. Before I went straigh he beat me. But after I went straight I beat his time by .4seconds and now he is going to go straight just to try and beat my time. I'm going to LuskVille DragWay on Saturday to race him and others. He thinks to highly of his car, every time he saves up for something to add to it something else brakes on it. For the add a turbo comment, yes I know, I want a turbo real bad, I'm getting a turbo engine installed next year, 2050$ +tax with install. So right now I'm not looking at putting too much money into this engine if I'm just going to get a new one next year. I just need some small easy thing to do. Id like to port it by Saturday but I dont think Ill have the time to do so. I'm going to order new spark plugs and wires Tuesday. Will getting a bigger fuel injector help any? I will lighten my load when I ge to LuskVille like taking the spare out and any tools I have. Not going to bother taking the sound system out cuz thats too much of a pain in my ass to put back in. What is the best RMP to shift at to not lose power. I almost beat and Acura RSX Type-S. I want to be in the high 15's this time around.

No point in getting bigger injectors, as even the stock 460cc injectors are more then enough for a ported engine.

Would changing the pulleys make a difrents? If yes, where can I get some before Saturday?

Yo, Brian Spillner, you can't just port a rotary in a few hours.

You need to:
- remove the engine from your car
- tear it down
- dremel out the ports (assuming you know what size and shape you want)
- rebuild with AT LEAST new soft seals (which you need to order first, and take some time to arrive).
- reinstall engine.

If you really want to do some porting by Saturday, port your Throttle Body.

-Pulleys won't do much. They are more of a final step for an already heavily modded car.
-Larger injectors are counterproductive, since to make your car faster, you need LESS fuel and not more. The stock fuel map is tuned rich. Get an S-AFC and lean out the maps if you want to play with fuel.
-The best bet for making your NA faster is WEIGHT REDUCTION. Strip out as much as you can.

You should make sure that your 5th and 6th aux ports are working and not seized. Now that you are running a straight pipe, chances are they won't get enough backpressure to activate, unless you've rigged something up. If these ports dont work then you will loose a lot of power.

Also, practise launching the car to get consistent good launches.

Aight that all cool, so if anyone who has done proting before and wants to do it to my car some time in the next couple months after I get my new job that pays more, let me know. How much it will cost me and do I have to get the templates?
And how long does it normaly take to do a good port job?
