Ontario Tire Stewardship
Have anyone heard of this?
http://www.ontariots.ca/?q=front_page Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS) is an Industry Funding Organizaiton(IFO) implementing and operation the approved USED tire program, a province-wide scrap tire solution for On-road and Off road tires supplied into the Ontario Market, diverting them away from Buring for the fuel and land filling to 3Rs(Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) processing and uses. Registration has begun for the Program, which officially launches September 1, 2009 THE NEW GOVERNMENT TIRE TAX IS $5.84 PER TIRE !!! ALL PURCHASES AFTER 9/1/2009 ARE SUBJECT TO THIS TAX ($23.36 PER SET OF TIRES) DAMN ... how come I never heard of this tax anywhere? |
I'm not trying to dabble in a political discussion, but clearly the Ontario gov't is raising taxes on multiple fronts. Maybe a tax increase is a good idea, or maybe not, but they should be honest about the intent. They are attempting to present these increases as for the greater good, but that's not really the purpose. The HST is a large tax increase under the guise of helping exporters, but they're playing favorites by hurting service industries, etc. Oil and oil filters had a tax added. Now tires. The taxes on all of the above have a very week case behind them.

Here in BC we already have the tax.
|
Actually as of today ona new car its $29.20 because of the spare tire!
|
Alberta has had a tire disposal/recycling fee of $4 or $5/per new tire sold for probably 15 years.
|
And this tax is on top of the double (2x) rate at the dump? Fun stuff.
|
Ontario already has that tire disposal tax long before already.
This is extra tax again ... Guess I'll be making more frequent trips to US or more orders from Tire Rack from now on. |
Double post.
