Next Winters Project-Poor Mans Mazda Furai

Right now I'm just in the research faze of It. I'll probably start makin the chassis this summer and just do work to it on the side .probably will take 2 years or so to finish

But How Sweet Would A 20b Lamborghini Murcielago be?

Anyways, I've spent the last couple nights reading about these. A place in the states sells a Lamborghini Murcielago fiberglass Replica kit bodies for $3000 or the hard top version for $3500. they come with all the body panels and interior panels. These arent the early 90's replica kits that look like crap. these are identical to the real cars, wheel base and everything.
Heres the kit im looking at they sell all the other little parts like headlights and everything

http://www.carkitinc.com/carkit2.php?id=6

I'd have to go down and pick it up in person though

Heres a couple finished cars they have the headlights blacked out theres the replica projectors availible.

For the Chassis I'll have 3 options. I can use either a MR2 or a fiero but both require the chassis to be cut and stretched.
or option 3 full tube chassis.
a company in the states sells the turbo chassis but also sells the plans. I found the plans for the chassis on the internet though. so rather than buy a car to hack up and risk screwing it all up plus i really dont like the idea of streching the chassis im just going to build the tube chassis with the plans. it uses alot of corvette suspension parts , heres a tube chassis without the body just to give you an idea

For the engine alot of people use the v12 out of the old bmw 750i's and transmission from a audi 5000 because they're cheap.they make an adapter plate for the engine and tranny to mount this will be my plan B. I want to see if I could get an adapter plate and flexplate made to work with a 20b and audi bellhousing.
keep the engine n/a with ITB's and a nice port job with S5 n/a rotors.

i figure i'd see if you guys have any thoughts or ideas let me know.
when I start building the chassis i'll make a new thread. this is just sort of a preview/Ideas thread

If its guna look like a lambo at least turbo it so you can run with a lambo.

sctRota 01-13-12 09:46 PM

SURPRISE! I have a Lamborghini Murcielago kit laying around at the shop...
Front end was completely destroyed in shipping so the owner left it along with the MR2  Sadly I got rid of the MR2 but I still got the motor. If you guys are interested pm me, I have EVERYTHING including the front light covers except for the front end its self:scratch:

If you want, after you build the chassis, try the shell on for size :)

hahaha sweet! we'll talk more soon
that place has a enzo body they had listed on ebay for 3k too

Both MR2 and Fiero chassis' suck. If you're building such a car, might as well go with a tube chassis. That way you can pick any suspension you want (like the millions of aftermarket parts available for the Corvette, for example). Loads of info on the Locost forum about designing a decent suspension..

I ended up finding out there is a guy in London that build the shells and cars, he does the lambo's, enzo, and pagani zonda

I have the plans for the NAERC Diablo/Mercielago chassis , theres tons of torrents out there for it its a big file. Im hoping to start mine late this summer

heres a couple pics of them one just the bare frame, other one with the sheet metal on

These kit cars designed to look like other cars have never really interested me. I've always found it cheapens the brand, like buying knockoff shoes at Pacific Mall or something.

When I was young. Long time ago:) I had a subscription to Kit Car magazine. It was always a dream of mine to build a kit car. But been blowing money on rotaries for 22years instead....

I think it would be fun to build a car from the ground up. I don't see myself being able to afford a mercielago anytime soon. if i can build something that looks identical to one and stick a n/a 20b in it. it might not make crazy power but that thing would be fun as hell to drive and look sweet.

CS13B 01-15-12 07:50 PM

Agreed, it would be lots of fun and yes building a car from the ground up is on my to-do list too lol

msmarlon 01-15-12 08:53 PM

wow i always wanted a locost but these look sick +1

I believe I know who you are referring to.

Why NA the 20B? They come with a set of turbos that will make 400HP without too much trouble.

FC3Sdrift 01-16-12 01:44 PM

nothing is set in stone yet. I have a while to figure out what im going to do, i've thought about using the stock turbos. I was just thinking of keeping everything simple at first. and get everything working properly before putting a turbo on.There's always the heating and cooling hassles that come with turbos. if I did go turbo I have a disassembled 13brew I could build and put a big turbo on it and make decent power. but then it wouldnt be 3 rotor which is what I mainly want. but 20b turbo set up can get expensive quick.
but either way down the road it would most likely end up turbo'ed
plus n/a 20b's sound bad ass

sctRota 01-16-12 04:11 PM

How much would it cost you to do the tube chassis?

R.P.M. 01-16-12 04:50 PM

If you used DOM tubing it'd be roughly $2500 in materials and welding supplies. If you opted for ERW tubing, probably half that.

Just a rough guess of course

Real ones are cheaper than you think.

Terrh 01-16-12 11:55 PM

older pasta rockets are even cheaper yet!

The Testarossa is one of the best automotive investments right now.

I was about to buy one about 5 years ago. Back then a nice one was around $35k, now you would be hard pressed to find the same car for $60k.

Ferrari flagship cars have always followed the same pattern. Eye watering expensive when new, followed by a sharp depreciation into everymans territory. And then a swift ascend into crazy prices.
The Daytonas and 512bb s all went through the same thing.

Hell I remember a friends of mines dad had 3 275 they were worth about $50k when we were growing up. Now those are
million dollar + cars.

I'm going to try and get one and tuck it away as soon as possible.

I think that's a much better investment than spending close to the amount on a kit car.

sctRota 01-22-12 06:07 PM

Soooooo, still want my lambo kit? Pm wont work for some reason:scratch:

Snrub 01-25-12 06:33 PM

Link to the London guy's site?

One thing to keep in mind, these are massively time consuming projects. A lot of people start and fail with Locost projects. The cost of the chassis bones might be cheap, but add it all up and you're looking at a not insignificant cost.

Fortune_Seven 01-31-12 09:54 PM

Interested to see how this goes! do a build thread for sure!
